Anomie and authoritarianism as factors influencing development and rise of racism in a society

Abstract:

Práce pojednává o vlivu anomie a autoritářství na vznik a rozvoj rasismu ve společnosti. Rasismus je postaven na rozlišování mezi členskou ingroup, ze které jedinec odvozuje svoji identitu a nečlenskou outgroup, která má být ve vztahu podřízenosti, nebo vyloučena ze společnosti. Outgroup, definována nejčastěji na základě rasy, etnicity nebo národnosti, je terčem předsudků. Předsudky tvoří základní formu rasismu a za určitých okolností mohou vést k takovým projevům, jako je segregace, diskriminace a násilí. Předsudky silně souvisejí s autoritářstvím, které je založeno na silné identifikaci jedince s ingroup a odmítáním outgroup. Spíše než osobnostní charakteristikou, která předisponuje jedince k etnocentrickému pohledu na svět a přijímaní předsudků vůči outgroup, se autoritářství jeví jako situačně podmíněný způsob vnímání světa vyznačující se kognitivním uzavřením. Autoritářské lpění na společenských normách a hodnotách, submise autoritám a odmítání outgroup je vyvoláno ohrožením sociálního postavení ingroup, společenské koheze a sociálních identit. Anomie představuje situační podmínku pro vznik rasismu. Je důsledkem společenských změn a krizí a vyskytuje se v silně individualizovaných moderních společnostech. Vyšší míra anomie je spojena s odmítáním příslušníků outgroup, protože představují ohrožení sociální identity a společenského postavení jedince. Rasismus v moderní době znovu vytváří dříve dané hranice mezi skupinami, které se v modernitě rozpadly. Je reakcí na zachování identit, které se vlivem přítomnosti cizích skupin mohou jevit jako ohrožené.

Abstract:

This paper examines the influence of anomie and authoritarianism on the development of racism in society. Racism is based on the distinction between the ingroup and the outgroup factors. Outgroup, defined mostly on the basis of race, ethnicity or nationality, is the target of prejudice. Prejudice is the basic form of racism. In some circumstances it can lead to the phenomenas such as segregation, discrimination and violence. It is related to authoritarianism, which is based on a strong personal identification with the ingroup and outgroup rejection. Authoritarianism seems to be a contingent way of perceiving the world, which is characterized by the cognitive closure. Authoritarian adherence to social norms of the submission and the rejection of the authority outgroup is caused by ingroup threat to social status, social cohesion and social identities. Anomie is a situational condition for the emergence of racism. It is the result of social changes and crises. It occurs in a highly individualized modern societies . The higher degree of anomie is associated with the rejection of outgroup members, that are considered as threating to social identity and social status of the individual. Racism in modern times is reconstructing the boundaries between groups, that have already existed before. It is responding to the preservation of identity, which can be described as threatened in the presence of foreign groups.
