The Use of Spanish Gerund in the Newspaper Functional Style of the Present Day. The Case of El País of 2019

Abstract:

In this diploma thesis, we were interested in the spanish gerund and in journalistic style and their connection together. The main goal of this diploma thesis was to find out, how often is gerund used actually, in the current journalistic functional style (specifically in the Daily El País). This document is divided into two main parts: the theoretical part and the practical part. We focused on three formations of the journalistic functional style (interview, editorial and journalistic report) in the Daily El País during the certain period (from 1th of March 2020 to 10th of June 2020). We were working with these categories: separate non-perifrastic gerund, non-perifrastic gerund as a core of nonflexive sentence and perifrastic gerund. These categories we call the classification and this classification we analyzed and evaluated in details. We found out, that each of the three formation of the journalistic functional style includes different ammount of the gerunds, we were interested in. We found 575 gerunds in the interviews, then 402 gerunds in the editorials and finally 553 gerunds in the journalistic reports. The perifrastic gerund (in the number of 425) was the mostly used one in interviews (especially the estar + gerund form). The non-perifrastic gerund as a core of nonflexive sentence played the main role in the editorials (we found 206 of this type of gerund). In conclusion, we have to poin out, that the perifrastic gerund (in the number of 356) was also the mostly used form of gerund in journalistic reports in the Spanish Daily El País (especially the estar + gerund form).

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývala španělským přechodníkem, novinářským stylem a jejich vzájemným propojením. Hlavním cílem práce bylo zjistit míru používání přechodníku v současném novinářském funkčním stylu (konkrétně v deníku El País). Tato práce je rozdělená na dvě hlavní části: část teoretickou a část praktickou. Sledovali jsme tři vybrané útvary novinářského funkčního stylu (rozhovor, úvodník a zprávu) v deníku El País za konkrétní časové období (01. 03. 2020 - 10. 06. 2020). Pracovali jsme s kategoriemi: samostatný neperifrastický přechodník, neperifrastický přechodník jako jádro neflexivní věty a perifrastické gerundium. Tuto klasifikaci jsme následně detailně rozebrali a vyhodnotili. Ukázalo se, že každý zkoumaný útvar novinářského funkčního stylu obsahuje jiné množství zkoumaných přechodníků. Celkově bylo nalezeno 575 přechodníků v rozhovorech, 402 přechodníků v úvodnících a 553 přechodníků ve zprávách. Nejvíc zastoupeným typem přechodníku byl v rozhovorech přechodník perifrastický v počtu 425 (převážně forma estar + gerundio). V úvodnících se jednalo o neperifrastický přechodník jako jádro neflexivní věty a konkrétní počet byl 206 těchto přechodníků. Na závěr je třeba zmínit také zprávy zkoumané ve španělském deníku El País, které obsahovaly rovněž nejvíce perifrastických přechodníků (zejména estar + gerundio) v počtu 356.
