Online Self - Help Communities for the Female Domestic Violence Victims

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá online svépomocnými komunitami pro ženské oběti domácího násilí. Teoretická část se věnuje definování domácího násilí a jeho kontextu, se zaměřením na online svépomocné komunity (pro ženské oběti domácího násilí). V tomto oddílu práce je vymezena online komunikace, definována sociální opora a sociální kapitál. Jsou v něm rovněž popsány rozdíly mezi face to face a online komunikací a definovány online svépomocné komunity, jejich znaky, typologie, klady a zápory. V metodologické části práce je zdůvodněna volba kvalitativních metod výzkumu, způsob výběru respondentů, jednotlivých nástrojů zkoumání a techniky sběru dat, přístup k analýze a interpretaci získaných poznatků, způsoby kontroly validity a operacionalizace dílčích výzkumných otázek. Empirická část je zaměřena na analýzu a interpretaci výzkumných poznatků získaných pomocí polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s osmnácti členkami online svépomocných komunit pro ženské oběti domácího násilí z USA, Kanady, Velké Británie a Austrálie. V závěru práce je zodpovězena hlavní výzkumná otázka: „Jakou roli hraje komunikace v rámci online svépomocných komunit pro ženské oběti domácího násilí na internetu?“ Ukazuje se, že online komunikace v rámci těchto komunit má potencionál empowermentu jejich členek prostřednictvím posílení jejich seběvědomí, zlepšení jejich vztahu k mužům a umožnění sdělit na sebe intimnější informace (než je tomu offline).

Abstract:

This thesis deals with online self – help communities for the female domestic violence victims. Its theoretical part is devoted to the definition of domestic violence and it’s context, with the focus on the online self – help communities (for the female domestic violence victims). In this chapter, there is defined on-line communication, social support and social capital. It also includes the description of the differences between the face to face and the online communication, including the definition of the online self – help communities, their features, typology, positives, and negatives. The methodological part of the thesis justifies the usage of the qualitative research methods, the process of selecting the respondents, the method and the technique for data collection, the approach to the analysis and the interpretation of the knowledge gained, as well as the methods for checking validity and operationalization of the particular research questions. The empirical part of the thesis focuses on the analysis and interpretation of research findings obtained through semi – structured interviews with eighteen female online self – help community members from the USA, Canada, Great Britain and Australia. In the conclusion of the thesis the author answered the following main research question: “What is the role of the online communication in the online self – help communities for the female domestic violence victims?” It has been shown that the online communication in these communities has the potential to empower their female members by increasing their positive self – esteem, by building their better attitude towards men and by giving them the chance to share more intimate information (than the offline communication).
