Švankmajer’s adaptation of Faustian myth

Abstract:

Cíle práce: Zaměřit se na nejdůležitější motivy Lekce Faust (film Jana Švankmajer) a ve srovnání s některými důležitými zpracováními (konkrétně Christopher Marlowe, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Matěj Kupecký) se snažit vyložit klíčové momenty a scény nesmrtelného faustovského mýtu a jejich vlivy na Švankmajerův film. Srovnání proto, že Švankmajer nejen svou metodou ale především už samotným svým duchovním zaměřením je surrealista, který z inspirace předešlými mýty umíchal svou osobitou verzi. Lekce Faust tak v historii mýtu zastává výjimečnou pozici, neboť se jedná o filmové zpracování, které navíc kolážovou metodou kombinuje předešlé formáty literární, dramatické a hudební. Práce se věnuje tématům manipulace, svobodné vůle a loutkovitosti, rozebírá detaily smlouvy s ďáblem, motiv slibu a scény Faustovi smrti a v důsledku toho možnosti vykoupení či zatracení duše. V neposlední řadě se zabývá obecnou charakteristikou dvou hlavních protagonistů – doktora Fausta a jeho pekelného sluhy Mefista – a snaží se vystihnout jejich osobnosti nejen v průběhu dějin mýtu, ale především ve Švankmajerově filmu.

Abstract:

Objectives of the work are: To aim at the most important motives of Lekce Faust (the movie of Jan Švankmajer) and in comparison with some significant versions of the legend (particularly Christopher Marlowe, Johann Wolfgang Goethe, Matej Kupecky) to try explain key moments and scenes of immortal Faustian myth and their influences to the movie. The comparison is chosen because Švankmajer is – not only in his method, but in his whole spirituality – surrealist, who mixed his original version from the inspiration by previous legends. Lekce Faust holds very specific position in the history of the myth, because it’s a movie adaptation which moreover in the method of collage combines previous literary, dramatic and musical formats. The work engages in motives of manipulation, free will and puppets, it explores details of the contract with the devil, the motive of promise and scenes of Faustus’ death and therefore possibilities of redemption or damnation of the human soul. At last, but not at least, the work deals with a general characteristics of two main protagonists – Doctor Faustus and his infernal servant Mephisto – and tries to comprehend their personalities not only during the history of the myth but mainly in the Švankmajers movie.
