Cognitive and Social Characteristics of Collaborative Learning in Immersive Virtual Reality

Abstract:

Nedávny vzostup spotrebiteľsky orientovaných zariadení imerzívnej virtuálnej reality (iVR) a ich rýchla integrácia do spoločnosti otvorili nové možnosti pre kolaboratívne učenie. To prináša mnohé afordancie do vzdelávacieho procesu, ale tiež si vyžaduje ďalší vedecký výskum, keďže kognitívne a sociálne charakteristiky kolaboratívneho učenia v iVR doposiaľ neboli dostatočne prebádané. Niektoré z teórií a konceptov súvisiacich s tradičným ne-imerzívnym počítačom-podporovaným kolaboratívnym učením (CSCL) môžu byť použité na objasnenie procesu kolaboratívneho učenia v iVR, avšak ďalšie skúmanie je potrebné, pretože iVR ponúka úplne nové podmienky a prostredie. Cieľom tejto dizertačnej práce bolo poskytnúť prehľad teoretických východísk a preskúmať využitie kolaboratívneho imerzívneho virtuálneho prostredia (CIVE), vyvinutého na Masarykovej univerzite, pre výučbu geografie. Dizertačná práca pozostáva z teoretickej časti a kolekcie dvoch výskumných článkov – kvalitatívneho a kvantitatívneho. Teoretická časť sa zameriava na virtuálnu realitu a kolaboratívne učenie, vrátane teórií, konceptov a predošlých štúdií. Kvalitatívna štúdia využila interpretatívnu fenomenologickú analýzu (IPA) na hĺbkové preskúmanie skúseností participantov s iVR počas lekcií využívajúcich kolaboratívne učenie. Dvanásť participantov v dyádach podstúpilo kolaboratívne učenie v našej CIVE aplikácii. Semištruktúrované IPA interview boli realizované s participantami v dyádach alebo vo focus group. Počas IPA analýzy boli identifikované štyri nadradené témy: 1) Ocenenie prítomnosti kolaboranta; 2) Prekvapivá „zábava s mapami“; 3) Komunikácia ako výzva; a 4) Kognícia v dvoch realitách. Tieto témy boli rozdelené do podriadených tém, ktoré opisovali spoločné skúsenosti participantov, pričom sa ukázalo, že: bez kolaboranta by sa cítili stratení; vyhľadávali verifikáciu a konsenzus s kolaborantom; ocenili možnosť konečne vidieť čo vrstevnice predstavujú v teréne; osvojili si zručnosť pre prácu s mapami; všimli si absenciu tvárí avatarov a chýbala im viditeľnosť emócií; potrebovali upraviť svoju komunikáciu kvôli obmedzeniam iVR ovládačov pre gestá; zaoberali sa nehmotnosťou svojho tela v iVR a snažili sa udržiavať obvyklú osobnú vzdialenosť; nevedeli si zvyknúť na nevidenie svojich nôh v iVR; stratili prehľad o objektívnej realite vďaka ponoreniu a zapojeniu sa do umelého sveta; a boli zmätení po návrate do objektívnej reality. Nadväzujúca kvantitatívna štúdia hodnotila efektivitu kolaboratívneho učenia v iVR a porovnávala ju s efektívnosťou individuálneho učenia. Táto štúdia tiež skúmala využívanie kognitívnych zdrojov a motiváciu kolaboratívnych a individuálnych študentov. Osemdesiat participantov podstúpilo vzdelávaciu intervenciu v iVR – buď samostatne alebo v dyáde s kolaborantom. Geografický pretest a posttest boli administrované pred a po tréningu v iVR, a dotazníky zamerané na využívanie kognitívnych zdrojov a výkonovú motiváciu na závere procedúry. Bola vykonaná štatistická analýza využívajúca: Friedman’s Two-way ANOVA, Mann–Whitney U test, a Gain Score Approach. Výsledky ukázali, že individuálne učenie signifikantne zvýšilo skóre a rýchlosť v geografických testoch. Kolaboratívne učenie tiež signifikantne zvýšilo skóre, ale nezvýšilo rýchlosť. Tieto výsledky boli diskutované v súvislosti s kognitívnou záťažou a sociálnymi faktormi v kolaboratívnej skupine. Porovnanie gain scores pre skóre a rýchlosť v geografickom teste medzi kolaboratívnou a individuálnou skupinou prinieslo iba nepriekazné výsledky, rovnako ako aj porovnanie výkonovej motivácie vypočítanej na základe dotazníka. Abstract:

Recent emergence of consumer-oriented immersive virtual reality (iVR) devices and their quick integration into society opened new possibilities for collaborative learning. This brings many affordances into the educational process but also calls for further scientific exploration, since the cognitive and social characteristics of collaborative learning in iVR have not yet been sufficiently studied. Some of the theories and concepts related to the traditional non-immersive computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) may be used to shed light on the process of collaborative learning in the iVR, however, further investigation is needed, since the iVR offers entirely new conditions and environment. The objective of this dissertation was to provide an overview of the theoretical background and to investigate the use of the collaborative immersive virtual environment (CIVE), developed at Masaryk University, for the education of geography. The dissertation consists of a theoretical chapter and a collection of two research papers – qualitative and quantitative. The theoretical chapter focuses on virtual reality and collaborative learning theories, concepts, and previous studies. The qualitative study utilized interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) to deeply explore the participants’ experiences of iVR during the collaborative learning sessions. Twelve participants in dyads underwent collaborative learning in our CIVE application. Semi-structured IPA interviews were conducted with participants in dyads or the focus group. Four superordinate themes were identified during the IPA analysis: 1) Appreciation for Having a Collaborator; 2) The Surprising “Fun with Maps”; 3) Communication as a Challenge; and 4) Cognition in Two Realities. These themes were divided into subordinate themes which described participants’ common experiences and showed that: they would have felt lost without a collaborator; they sought verification and consensus with the collaborator; they appreciated finally seeing what contour lines represent in terrain; they acquired skill for working with maps; they noticed the absence of avatar faces and missed the visibility of emotions; they needed to modify their communication because of iVR controllers limitations for gestures; they dealt with having an intangible body in iVR but tried to keep a usual personal distance; they could not get used to not seeing their own legs in iVR; they lost track of objective reality thanks to the immersion and involvement in the artificial world; and they felt confusion after the return to objective reality. The follow-up quantitative study assessed the effectiveness of collaborative learning in iVR and compared it to the effectiveness of individual learning. This study also investigated the use of cognitive resources and the motivation of collaborative and individual learners. Eighty participants underwent an iVR learning intervention, either alone or in a dyad with a collaborator. Geographical pretest and posttest were administered before and after the training in iVR, and questionnaires aimed at the use of cognitive resources and the performance motivation at the end of the session. Statistical analysis utilizing Friedman’s Two-way ANOVA, Mann–Whitney U test, and Gain Score Approach, has been conducted. The results showed that the individual learning significantly increased scores and speed in geographical tests. Collaborative learning also significantly increased scores but did not increase the speed. This was discussed in relation to the cognitive load and social factors in the collaborative group. Comparison of gain scores for the geographical test score and speed between the collaborative and individual group yielded inconclusive results, as did the comparison of performance motivation calculated from the questionnaire.
