Ianfu: Survivng Legacies of the Asia-Pacific War

Abstract:

This Bachelor’s thesis analyzes the various interpretations of the controversial Japanese term ianfu (commonly translated to English as “comfort women”). Rather than solely focusing on the war period, the work positions ianfu in a broad context of sexual exploitation in the case of Japan by describing the historical background of its nascence during the Asia-Pacific war and, afterwards, the immediate postwar development. Finally, the work explains how was the neglected issue retrospectively problematized in the recent years and what were the impacts of redefining ianfu as sexual slavery under the Japanese state on Japan’s international relations with the Republic of Korea, which remain questionable until today.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca analyzuje rôznorodé interpretácie kontroverzného japonského termínu ianfu (známy predovšetkým v jeho anglickom preklade „comfort women“) a skúma historické pozadie jeho vzniku a bezprostredný povojnový vývoj. V práci je tento pojem umiestnený do širšieho kontextu sexuálneho vykorisťovania v Japonsku. V záverečnej kapitole práca objasňuje, ako sa dlhé roky ignorovaná záležitosť retrospektívne problematizovala počas nedávneho vývoja a aký dopad malo redefinovanie ianfu na „sexuálne otroctvo Japonského štátu“ na bilaterálne vzťahy Japonska a Južnej Kórey, ktorých budúcnosť ostáva s súčasnosti otázna.
