The struggle for politically engaged art: appreciated and rejected under the communist and Nazi regimes

Abstract:

Magisterská diplomová práce se soustředí na kulturní politiku SSSR a nacistického Německa vůči modernímu a avantgardnímu umění. V první řadě se práce soustředí na nejdůležitější osobnosti v otázkách kultury a ideologii dvou totalitárních režimů, postavení oficiálního a neoficiálního umění. Cílem této práce je porovnání metod omezení ideologicky nevhodného umění ve Třetí říši a v Sovětském svazu. Úvodní část práce seznámí čtenáře s německou kulturní scénou v době před druhou světovou válkou, oficiálním a „zvrhlým“ uměním. Následující část práce se věnuje kulturní politice v Sovětském svazu, hlavním rysům oficiálního umění a neoficiální kultuře. Třetí část práce bude bezprostředně postavena na komparaci kulturní politiky obou režimů včetně porovnání oficiální umělecké scény a praxí omezení avantgardního umění.

Abstract:

The master's thesis examines the cultural policy of the USSR and Nazi Germany towards modern and avant-garde art. Firstly, the thesis focuses on the most important personalities in the cultural and ideological scene of the two totalitarian regimes, the different positions on official and unofficial art. This thesis aims to compare the methods of restricting ideologically inappropriate art in the Third Reich and the Soviet Union. The introductory part of the thesis analyses the German cultural scene in the pre-World War II era, what was considered official art, and what was perceived as "degenerate". The following part of the thesis deals with cultural policy in the Soviet Union, the main features of official art and unofficial culture. To conclude with a direct comparison of the cultural policies of the two regimes, including a comparison of the official art scene and the practice of restricting avant-garde art.
