Dental hygiene as the basis of successful treatment with fixed orthodontic appliance- effective patient motivation and instruction

Abstract:

This master´s thesis deals with the effective education of patients with fixed orthodontic appliances, which leads to optimal oral hygiene. The thesis explains the negative effect of the bacterial plaque on the tooth and its surrounding structures. Fixed orthodontic appliance represents retention factor of coating, therefore, there is a higher risk of diseases such as dental caries, gingivitis and periodontitis in patients during orthodontic treatment. To achieve the desired result of orthodontic treatment, the orthodontist and dental hygienist need to work together as a team. The duty of dental hygienist is to effectively motivate the patient and teach him the techniques of removing plaque, which will ensure a perfectly clean oral cavity and maintain oral health throughout the treatment with fixed orthodontic appliances. The thesis is divided into theoretical and practical part. In the theoretical part, this issue is explained according to scientific sources. The practical part is focused on the creation of educational material, which will help dental hygienists perfectly motivate patients and instruct them in their own surgeries. Part of the practical part is effective cleaning techniques, which are the basis for perfect removal of the bacterial coating.

Abstract:

Diplomová práca sa zaoberá efektívnou edukáciou pacienta s fixným ortodontickým aparátom, ktorá vedie k dosiahnutiu optimálnej orálnej hygieny. V práci je vysvetlený negatívny vplyv bakteriálneho povlaku na zub a jeho okolité štruktúry. Fixný ortodontický aparát predstavuje retenčný faktor povlaku, preto je u týchto pacientov vyššie riziko vzniku ochorení ako je zubný kaz, gingivitída a parodontitída. Pre dosiahnutie požadovaného výsledku ortodontickej liečby je potrebná spolupráca ortodontistu a dentálnej hygieničky. Jej úlohou je pacienta efektívne motivovať k čisteniu a naučiť ho techniky čistenia, ktoré mu zaistia dokonale čistú ústnu dutinu a udržanie orálneho zdravia počas celej liečby fixným ortodontickým aparátom. Diplomová práca je rozdelená na teoretickú a praktickú časť. Teoretická časť popisuje problematiku podľa uvedených zdrojov. Praktická časť je zameraná na tvorbu edukačného materiálu, ktorý pomôže dentálnym hygieničkám pacienta perfektne motivovať a inštruovať v ich ordináciách. Súčasťou praktickej časti sú techniky efektívneho čistenia, ktoré sú základom pre dokonalé odstránenie bakteriálneho povlaku z povrchu zubov.
