Abstract:

Tato disertační práce se zabývá městskou centralitou. Městská centra nemají nejen v humánní geografii pevně ustálenou definici, naopak představují velmi široce chápaný pojem. Tato volatilita v mnoha ohledech není překážkou, aby na centrum bylo odkazováno jako na klíčový prvek prostorového plánování, urbánních strategií nebo každodenního městského života. Nepostradatelnost (konceptu) centra v kombinaci s jeho volatilní definicí proto vede ke spoléhání se (pouze) na intuitivní porozumění městskému centru. Pod intuitivním porozuměním se nicméně často skrývá pouze velmi abstraktní forma či představa centra. Tato disertační práce si proto klade za cíl hlouběji porozumět podstatě městské centrality. Záměrem je analyzovat povahu městských center v dlouhodobém kontextu s ohledem na socio-ekonomický kontext střední a východní Evropy. Za tímto účelem si předložená práce všímá role center zejména v turbulentních situacích, které napomáhají a do značné míry i odkrývají automatické mechanismy, které městská centra formují. Teoretická část práce si všímá povahy center jak z perspektivy prostoru, tak perspektivy času (prominence). Diskutovány jsou základní časoprostorové principy jako akumulace, hustota, nebo časová prominence, které se k centralitě silně vážou. Zvýšený důraz je zároveň kladen na jejich vzájemné prolínání jak na úrovni každodennosti, tak na úrovni proměn mezi jednotlivými érami. Kromě rozboru diskurzivních rovin v teoretické části je záměr práce naplňován prostřednictvím pěti odborných publikací. Každá z publikací se věnuje situaci některé z jednotlivých socio-ekonomických ér. Zachyceny jsou posuny centra ve středověké Praze, stejně jako v (průmyslovém) socialistickém Brně. Největší pozornost je věnována současnému městskému (post-)diskurzu opět na příkladu Brna. Vložené publikace přibližují jak odolnost městských center, tak naopak selhání jejich role pod tlakem aktuálních empirických událostí. Disertační práce v závěru konstatuje, že je obtížné mluvit o obecně platné jednotné definici centra. Naopak povahu centra je vždy nutné vztahovat ke konkrétnímu dobovému městskému kontextu. Disertační práce tím zároveň ukázala, jak komplikované může být propojení časových úrovní každodennosti a delších časových rámců.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with urban centrality. Urban centres do not have a fixed definition in human geography. Overall, it is a very broadly understood concept. In many cases, this volatility is not an obstacle to referring to the centre as a critical element of spatial planning, urban strategies, or everyday urban life. The indispensability of (concepts of) the centre, combined with its volatile definition, leads to a reliance (only) on an intuitive understanding of the urban centre. However, an intuitive understanding often represents only a very abstract form or idea of the centre. Therefore, this thesis aims to understand a nature of urban centrality in more depth. The intention is to analyse the nature of urban centres in a long-term context, considering the socio-economic situation of Central and Eastern Europe (CEE). For this purpose, the thesis notes the role of centres, especially in turbulent situations, that facilitate and broadly reveal automatic mechanisms that shape urban centres. The theoretical part of the thesis analyses the nature of centres from both spatial and temporal perspectives. Basic spatio-temporal principles such as accumulation, density, or temporal prominence, strongly related to centrality, are discussed. At the same time, an increased emphasis is put on their interpenetration, both at the level of everydayness and transformations between eras. In addition to the analysis of discursive views in the theoretical part, the intention of the thesis is fulfilled through five publications. Each of the papers focuses on a particular socio-economic era. The shifts of the centre in medieval Prague, as well as in (industrial) socialist Brno, are captured. Most attention is paid to contemporary urban (post-)discourses using Brno again as an example. The included publications present both the resilience of urban centres and, conversely, the failure of their role under the pressure of current empirical events. The thesis concludes by stating that speaking of a generally valid definition of the centre is difficult. On the contrary, the nature of centres must always be related to the specific contemporary context. The thesis also showed how complicated the connection between everydayness and more extended time frames can be.
