Physical disability and space: autoethnography in a disabling city

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá způsobem, jakým je konstruován tělesný hendikep v městském prostoru. Pro její teoretické ukotvení je klíčové představení konceptu hendikepujícího města. Podle něj je hendikep nikoliv individuální daností, nýbrž je vytvářen na základě normativně konstruovaného fyzického prostoru. Tento pohled vychází z kritiky medicinského a esencializujícího pohledu na hendikep jako na něco, co je neměnným atributem těla a naopak umožňuje změnit naši perspektivu na to, co považujeme za normální, zdravé či projevem nemoci a postižení. Součástí práce je autoetnografický výzkum, který jsem provedla jako asistentka studentů/ek s tělesným hendikepem. Na základě vlastní zkušenosti z terénu a etnografických poznámek zkoumám, co znamená zkušenost s hendikepujícím městem v praxi. Ptám se zde, jakými způsoby je hendikep konstruován, jaké jsou vlastní strategie vypořádávání se s hendikepujícím prostorem a zda můžeme zaznamenat i takové strategie, které normativní diskurs normálního a deviantního těla narušují. Výzkum přináší analýzu konstrukce hendikepu ve městě, kritický vhled do problematiky vztahu mezi městem a tělesným postižením a zároveň přinesení nové perspektivy k tématu bariérovosti.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis discusses the issue of the construction of physical disability in the city. The key concept here is a disabling city. According to this concept, disability is not an objective feature, but is produced within a normatively constructed physical space. This perspective is based on the critique of medical and essentialist approaches to disability; on the contrary, it helps to change the way we perceive things as normal and healthy or sick and disabled. A part of the thesis is an auto-ethnographic research based on my praxis as a personal assistant of disabled students. I explore the experience of a disabling city based on my experiences and field notes. The research questions are: How is disability constructed in the city? What are the strategies of dealing with a disabling city? Are there any subversive strategies that disturb the normality/deviance discourse in the city space? The research presents an analysis of the construction of disability in the city, a critical insight into the issue and a new perspective on accessibility in the city.
