Bent seating furniture created by The Thonet company and possible methods of its dating

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se bude zabývat ohýbaným sedacím nábytkem firmy Thonet (dnes TON) a možnými metodami jeho datace. V práci se dále zaměřím na definici pojmu „ohýbaný nábytek“ a historií firmy Thonet. V rámci výzkumu budou využity měřící metody, prostřednictvím kterých lze zjistit rozdílné rozměry jednotlivých částí ohýbaného sedacího nábytku. Další fází bude empirický výzkum jednotlivých částí sedacího nábytku a jejich případných rozdílů, které mohly vzniknout změnou technologie výroby v dlouhodobém výrobním procesu (nálepka, sedák, spojení trnože atd.). Tyto metody budou aplikovány na sedacím nábytku firmy Thonet, který byl na trhu před rokem 1920 a je vyráběn dodnes, konkrétně na židlích s modelovým názvem č. 14 a č. 18 a dále na křesle č. 6009. Zkoumaný nábytek je součástí sbírek soukromého Muzea nábytku Františka Tomčaly v Miloticích nad Opavou, dále částí stálé expozice firmy TON v Bystřici pod Hostýnem a také ve stálé expozici „Fenomén ohýbaného nábytku“ Muzea regionu Valašsko. Metody a výsledky výzkumu budou konzultovány s kompetentními pracovníky z výše zmíněných institucí.

Abstract:

The Bachelor Thesis will focus on bent seating furniture created by the Thonet company (nowadays knows as TON) and possible methods of its dating. The Thesis will deal with a definition of the Thonet company of bent furniture and its history. In the research part of the thesis, measurement methods will be applied through which it will be possible to discover dissimilar parameters of individual parts of such furniture. The next phase will describe the empirical research of individual seating furniture parts and their potential differences which may be caused by a change of the production technology, for example by a sticker, a seat, a stretcher embedding and others. Such methods will be applied to the Thonet seating Furniture which was on the furniture market even before the year 1920 and it has been produced to this day, specifically to chairs with the model name number 14 and number 18. They will be also applied on an arm chair with a number 6009. Focused furniture is a part of collection in The František Tomčala private Museum in Milotice nad Opavou and a part of the permanent exhibition called The Phenomenon of bent furniture owned by The Wallachian Museum. The methods and results will be consulted with competent staff from the earlier mentioned institutions.
