KonMari method - sociological reflection of the book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying

Abstract:

This thesis analyses the book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organising by the Japanese author Marie Kondo, and the factors behind its worldwide success. The aim is to conduct a sociological reflection on the principles of tidying and organising introduced in the book. The theoretical part of this paper focuses on the concept of home and lifestyle. It puts an emphasis on the physical structure of home, and the importance of the ability to alter this structure in creating the feeling of home. Next, the dissertation discusses housework from feminist perspective, and looks at Japanese lifestyle and aesthetics as adopted in the western society. The empirical part of this paper consists of qualitative analysis of The Life¬¬-Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organising. The focus lies on three key topics. First, it compares the perceptions of cleanliness and order in the western society with the views expressed by Ms Kondo. Second, it describes the gender aspects of the book. The empirical art concludes by looking at the particular approach to consumption which underpins the tidying method presented in the book.

Abstract:

Bakalárska práca reaguje na svetový úspech knihy Kúzelné upratovanie od japonskej autorky Marie Kondo a za cieľ si kladie sociologickú reflexiu princípov, na ktorých je postavená metóda upratovania prezentovaná v knihe. V teoretickej časti sa práca zameriava na pojatie bývania a domova, pričom zdôrazňuje fyzickú štruktúru domova a možnosť ovplyvňovať jeho podobu ako výraznú podmienku pocitu domova. Ďalej približuje domáce práce z feministického hľadiska a rozoberá japonské bývanie a estetiku tak, ako sa ukotvila v západnej spoločnosti. V praktickej časti práca prináša kvalitatívnu analýzu knihy Kúzelné upratovanie pričom sa podrobne zaoberá trom nosným témam. Práca porovnáva koncept čistoty a poriadku v západnej spoločnosti s pojatím prezentovaným v knihe. V ďalšej časti popisuje genderové hľadisko knihy. Analytickú časť uzatvára téma spotreby, ktorá úzko súvisí s metódou upratovania prezentovanou v knihe.
