An Analysis of Czenglish in an Error Tagged Learner Corpus

Abstract:

Tato práce a výzkum byly inspirovány slavnou knihou Dona Sparlinga English or Czenglish? Jak se vyhnout čechismům v angličtině. Czenglish je příkladem toho, co studium akvizice druhého jazyka nazývá transferem nebo mezi-jazykovým vlivem a tento koncept je ústřední pro tuto práci. Kromě konceptu transferu představuje tato práce širší koncept žákovského jazyka. Zdůrazňuje význam a důležitost chyb, které žáci dělají, pro výzkum a pedagogiku a užitek, který přináší žákům a pedagogům analýza chyb. Výzkum čechismů v této práci zkoumá chyby studentů za pomoci analýzy chyb. Je představen nový přístup ke studiu chyb – korpusová analýza, která je považována za revoluční směr v lingvistice. Tato metodologie, konkrétně tagování chyb v korpusu, je využita při analýze čechismů v této práci. Pro potřeby této analýzy byl vytvořen žákovský korpus a chyby identifikovány, popsány a vyhodnoceny. Čechismy byly objeveny ve všech jazykových podsystémech, které byly předmětem výzkumu, tj. v gramatické, lexikální i lexiko-gramatické doméně. Tato práce, a s ní spojený výzkum, měla několik cílů. Analyzovala Czenglish s cílem zjistit roli transferu v procesu učení se druhému jazyku. Tento cíl byl dosažen označením jazykových oblastí, které dělají žákům největší potíže. Kromě toho si kladla za cíl zjistit využitelnost konkrétního tagovacího systému v pedagogickém procesu. Jeho přínos a nedostatky jsou uvedeny v závěru této práce.

Abstract:

This thesis and the research were inspired by the famous book by Don Sparling English or Czenglish? Jak se vyhnout čechismům v angličtině. Czenglish is an example of what the study of the second language acquisition terms as transfer or cross-linguistic influence and this concept is central to this thesis. Apart from the concept of transfer, the thesis introduces a wider concept of learner language. It highlights the significance and importance of learner errors in research and language teaching and the benefits students and teachers have from analysing errors. The research into Czenglish studies learner errors by the means of error analysis. The thesis introduces a new approach to the study of learner errors which is viewed as a ‘revolutionary’ trend in linguistics – a corpus-based error analysis. This methodology, namely error tagging system, is used in the analysis of Czenglish. For the purpose of this analysis a learner corpus was collected and errors identified, described and evaluated. Czenglish errors were identified in all linguistic subsystems that are subject to this research – i.e. in grammar, lexical and lexico-grammar domains. This thesis, with the assistance of the Czenglish research, had several goals in mind. It analysed Czenglish in order to see the role of transfer in learning a second language. This aim was achieved by determining the linguistic areas that cause major difficulties for learners. In addition, it aimed at testing applicability of a particular error tagging system in the teaching process. Its benefits and drawbacks for teachers and learners are outlined in the conclusion.
