Humanitarian intervention in Libya in 2011: causes and consequences

Abstract:

Autorka na základě široké škály primárních a sekundárních zdrojů analyzuje politický a socioekonomický stav Libye, která v roce 2011 přežila arabské jaro a zahraniční intervenci sil NATO a některých arabských spojenců. Příspěvek zkoumá vnitřní a vnější důvody, které vedly k občanským nepokojům a následnému pádu autoritářského režimu Muammara Kaddáfího. Rovněž hodnotí výsledky intervence s ohledem na vnitřní situaci v zemi a dopad pádu režimu na mezinárodní bezpečnost. Dále autorka zmiňuje rozdělení vlády na dvě opoziční centra v Tripolisu a Benghází, vzestup kriminality v zemi a nárůst tribalismu jako hlavní důsledky ozbrojených zásahů v občanské válce v Libyi. Rovněž je zdůrazněno, že ze socioekonomického hlediska se země zastavila ve svém rozvoji. Na mezinárodní úrovni dochází ke zvýšení přílivu migrantů, rozšíření činnosti teroristických skupin a proliferaci zbraní hromadného ničení do rukou nestátních aktérů.

Abstract:

Based on a wide range of primary and secondary sources, the author analyzes the political and socio-economic situation of Libya, which has survived the Arab Spring and the foreign intervention of NATO forces and some Arab allies in 2011. The paper examines the internal and external reasons that led to the civil unrest and the subsequent fall of the authoritarian regime of Muammar Gaddafi. It also evaluates the results of the intervention, taking into account the internal situation in the country and the impact of the fall of the regime on international security. The author also notes the division of the government into two opposition centres in Tripoli and Benghazi, the rise of crime in the country and the rise of tribalism as the main consequences of armed interventions in the civil war in Libya. It is also emphasized that, from a socio-economic point of view, the country has stalled in its development. At the international level, there is an increase in the influx of migrants, the expansion of terrorist groups and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction into the hands of non-state actors.
