Hand hygiene and its importance in healthcare

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá problematikou hygieny rukou ve zdravotnictví od její historie po současný stav. Rozebírá pokrok hygieny rukou napříč stoletími, od klasického mytí rukou mýdlem a vodou po vznik dezinfekce na bázi alkoholu. U dezinfekčních přípravků na ruce pak práce rozebírá specifika dezinfekčních přípravků na ruce ve zdravotnictví, spektra účinnosti podle českých technických norem a také srovnání spotřeby dezinfekčních přípravků na ruce napříč státy a zdravotnickými odděleními. Nemalou součástí teoretické části je i menší vstup do problematiky infekcí spojených se zdravotní péčí, tedy všech nemocí, které vznikly v příčinné souvislosti s pobytem ve zdravotnickém zařízení. Hygiena rukou je totiž preventivní opatření číslo jedna pro zabránění vzniku i přenosu těchto infekcí. Praktická část je vedena formou rešerše literatury z děl, která se zabývají hygienou rukou ve zdravotnictví a má za úkol zjistit její význam. V závěru dochází práce ke zjištění, že pokrok v oblasti hygieny okolo počátku 21. století, kdy se zavedly dezinfekční přípravky na ruce na bázi alkoholu, sice vedl k celkovému zlepšení zabránění přenosu infekcí, ale je stále potřeba zavádět opatření ke zlepšení dostupnosti a dodržování samotné hygieny rukou.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis deals with the issue of hand hygiene in healthcare from its history to the current state. It discusses the progress of hand hygiene over the centuries, from classic hand washing with soap and water to the emergence of alcohol-based disinfectants. In the case of hand sanitizers, the work analyzes the specifics of hand sanitizers in the healthcare sector, the spectrum of effectiveness according to Czech technical standards as well as a comparison of the consumption of hand sanitizers across countries and health departments. A significant part of the theoretical part is also a minor introduction to the issue of infections associated with health care, i.e. all diseases that arose in a causal connection with a stay in a medical facility. Hand hygiene is the number one preventive measure for preventing the occurrence and transmission of these infections. The practical part is conducted in the form of a literature search of works that deal with hand hygiene in healthcare and has the task of finding out its meaning. In conclusion, the work concludes that progress in the field of hygiene around the beginning of the 21st century, when alcohol-based hand sanitizers were introduced, led to an overall improvement in the prevention of infection transmission, but there is still a need to introduce measures to improve the availability and compliance of the hand hygiene.
