The Spanish Inquisition and the torture as an instrument of totalitarian control of the society

Abstract:

This thesis was dedicated to the Spanish Inquisition ant the torture as an instrument of totalitarian control of the society. The thesis is divided into two parts: the theoretical and the practical one. The theoretical part deals with the historical context of the formation the inquisition, her gradual progress in Spain, general attributes of her composition and operation. Then we attend to the main criticized point of that epoch, that is the torture, and we compare his utilization in the Spanish Inquisition with others inquisitions in that time, the seculares tribunales or this time. In the practical part we investigate opinions of the Spanish population about this inseparable part of their history, which means the Spanish Inquisition. We have reached a conclusion, that a crushing majority woudln´t have first-hand experience of that epoch, in considering of the number of the victims of the inquisition in Spain they are very close to the numbers of some topical historians, and they are opposite using the torture, whether in the past times or nowadays.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá Španělskou inkvizicí a mučením jako nástrojem totalitní kontroly společnosti. Práce je rozdělena na dvě části: na část teoretickou a praktickou. V teoretické části se zabýváme historickým kontextem vzniku inkvizice, jejím postupným rozvojem ve Španělsku, obecnými charakteristikami jejího složení a fungování. Dále se věnujeme hlavnímu kritizovanému bodu tohoto období, a to mučení, přičemž jeho využití ve Španělské inkvizici srovnáváme s jinými inkvizicemi té doby, světskými soudy, či dnešní dobou. V praktické části zkoumáme pomocí ankety názory Španělů na tuto nedílnou součást jejich historie, tedy Španělské inkvizice. Na závěr hodnotíme jejich pocity, domněnky či představy. Dospěli jsme k závěru, že drtivá většina by takovou dobu nechtěla zažít, vzhledem k počtu obětí inkvizice ve Španělsku se blíží hodnotám nynějších historiků a jsou proti používání tortury, ať už v minulosti, tak dnes.
