Communication strategies in representation of female and male characters in the case of Doctor Who fandom

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá komunikačními strategiemi v zobrazování ženských a mužských postav na příkladu konkrétní online fanouškovské komunity seriálu Doctor Who. Nejprve perspektivou feministické kritiky médií definuje strategie dominantní kultury, které využívají tradičního a dichotomického zobrazování feminity a maskulinity, s čímž souvisí stereotypní a negativní zobrazování ženských hrdinek. Poté definuje fandom jako aktivní publikum a participační subkulturu, která je charakteristická kriticko-reflexivním vztahem vůči dominantní kultuře. Ve fanouškovských textech vybrané komunity předpokládá nalezení kritické reflexe tradičního a stereotypního zobrazování ženských a mužských postav v dominantní kultuře. Pomocí naratologické a diskurzivní analýzy analyzuje 15 fanouškovských povídek a diskuzních příspěvků u nich. Výchozí předpoklad fanouškovské rezistence vůči dominantním komunikačním strategiím se nepotvrzuje a je nalezena konformita s nimi, kterou se autorka práce pokouší vysvětlit zvýšenými trendy spektakularizace a performativity mediálních publik.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with communication strategies in representation of female and male characters in the case of a specific online Doctor Who fan community. Firstly, using the perspective of feminist media criticism, the thesis defines strategies of dominant culture that contain traditional and dichotomous representations of femininity and masculinity, which are related to stereotypical and negative representation of female heroines. Secondly, the thesis defines fandom as an active audience and a participatory subculture, which is characterized by critical and reflexive relation to the dominant culture. In the fan texts of selected community, the thesis assumes to find a critical reflexion of traditional and stereotypical representations of female and male characters in the dominant culture. Using methods of narrative and discursive analyses, the thesis analyzes 15 fan short stories and commentaries in discussions below them. The underlying premise of fan resistance against dominant communication strategies is not confirmed. Instead, a conformity with them is found. The author is trying to explain this by trends of increasing spectacularization and performativity of media audiences.
