Epigraphical evidence of echoes of selected Roman poets

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce si klade za cíl předložit systematicky řazený a komentovaný soubor nápisných památek nalezených na území římského impéria, jejichž text obsahuje či využívá verše známých římských básníků nebo z nich čerpá inspiraci. Celkem bylo s pomocí elektronických databází a knižních publikací nalezeno 87 nápisných dokladů, které časově spadají do období 1.—7. století našeho letopočtu. Úvod práce představuje její cíle, dále je popsána role autorů citovaných na nápisech jakožto římských školních autorů, a následně problematika římské epigrafiky v rozsahu potřebném pro tuto práci, metodologie a limitace bádání a systém řazení a kategorizace nápisných památek v předkládaném korpusu. Následující kapitoly jsou děleny podle autorů, kteří jsou na nápisech citováni, a obsahují analýzy těchto nápisů a veršů v nich užitých, kategorizaci nápisů a krátká shrnutí. Závěr práce prezentuje shrnutí výsledků analýzy a dále obsahuje přehledové tabulky se statistickými údaji o nalezených nápisných památkách.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis aims to present a systematically ordered and commented corpus of epigraphic evidence containing quotations of selected Roman poets and inscriptions which are inspired by the verses of these authors. The corpus contains 87 inscriptions in total, ranging from the 1st to the 7th century AD. The introductory part sets out the aims of the thesis and explains the role of some of the quoted poets in the Roman education system. Afterward, a brief introduction into Roman epigraphy is provided, followed by a presentation of the methodology of this researched and its limitations, as well as the principles behind ordering the inscriptions in the corpus and classifying them. The main body of thesis contains a categorisation, analysis, and commentary of the inscriptions. This part is divided into chapters based on the quoted poet and each chapter contains also a short summary. The conclusion presents a summary of the research and analyses, and also offers tables containing statistical data about the inscriptions included in the corpus.
