The image of a spiritual crisis through view of mental health specialists

Abstract:

Kvalitativní studie se zabývá konstrukcí obrazu psychospirituální krize pohledem odborníků na duševní zdraví. Úvod práce nabízí vymezení pojmů spirituality, náboženství, hranic normality a patologie, krátký přehled historie vzniku tohoto konceptu a stručný popis jednotlivých obrazů psychospirituální krize. Pro zodpovězení výzkumné otázky (jaký je obraz psychospirituální krize pohledem odborníků na duševní zdraví?) využívá práce metodu tematické analýzy. Bylo provedeno 10 polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s psychology a psychiatry cíleně nepracujících i pracujících se skupinou klientů/pacientů procházející psychospirituální krizí. Ve výsledcích se u obou skupin odborníků mimo jiné objevilo ambivalentní vnímání spirituality ve společnosti a v terapeutickém procesu, otevřený a akceptující přístup odborníků k neobvyklým prožitkům klienta/pacienta nezávisle na jeho diagnóze, náročnost diferenciální diagnostiky, užitečnost zařazení psychospirituální krize do diagnostických manuálů, východiska léčby a potřeba větší informovanosti o celém konceptu. Nepatologická diagnóza psychospirituální krize nabízí otevřený a akceptující pohled na mimořádné zážitky a roli spirituality jako přirozené součásti lidského života.

Abstract:

This qualitative study examines the creation of the psychospiritual crisis seen from the perspective of mental health specialists. The introduction of the thesis provides definitions of spirituality, religion, of the boundaries of normality and pathology. Furthermore, this part further offers a brief overview of the history of psychospiritual crisis as well as a delineation of its specific types. The research question, of what the image of psychospiritual crisis is from the perspective of mental health specialists, is answered by the use of the method of thematic analysis. In total, ten psychologists and psychiatrists were interviewed. Half of them worked with clients going through a psychospiritual crisis whereas the other half did not have these clients in their job description. The study produced several results. First, the results in both groups of experts showed an existence of ambivalent perception on spirituality, their open-minded approach to exceptional experiences and the problematic nature of doing the differential diagnosis of psychospiritual crisis. Second, the study further showed the usefulness of the inclusion of psychospiritual crisis to the diagnostic manuals. Finally, the results also suggest that more research is needed in this field. Non-pathological diagnosis of psychospiritual crisis offers an open and more accepting view on the exceptional experiences and the role of spirituality as a natural part of human life.
