Czech Foreign Policy after 1989 - "Back to Europe"

Abstract:

Tématem této diplomové práce je formování zahraniční politiky ČR po roce 1989, jejímž základním východiskem byl tzv. návrat do Evropy, který byl chápán jako opětovné zařazení země mezi vyspělé, evropské demokracie. Jako faktické naplnění tohoto cíle bylo obecně přijímáno zapojení země do evropských platforem spolupráce, zejména pak získání členství v Evropských společenstvích, resp. Evropské unii. Záměrem práce bylo analyzovat toto období z hlediska praktického naplnění proklamovaného „návratu do Evropy“, pozornost byla tématu věnována z několika úhlů pohledu, kdy kromě oficiální vládní politiky byly sledovány také postoje jednotlivých relevantních politických stran, významných osobností doby, ale také samotného Společenství. Výchozí motivací autorky bylo prokázat, zda „návrat do Evropy“ byl pouhým polistopadovým heslem nebo skutečnou a ucelenou koncepční představou, která určila směřování zahraniční politiky na několik dalších let.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with formation and development of the foreign policy of Czech republic after year 1989. A fundamental basis of which was so-called Return to Europe, which foremost means the reinstatement of our republic between developed countries, between European democracies. This objective has been theoretically fulfilled as the Czech republic has been widely accepted to European countries cooperation platforms, particularly by becoming a membership of the European Communities, respectively the European Union. The aim of this study was to analyze the practical fulfilment of the proclaimed "Return to Europe", attention was devoted to the topic from several points of view besides the official government policies, the positions of relevant political parties, prominent personalities of the time, but also the Community itself was monitored. Initial motivation for the author was to show whether the "Return to Europe" was just ”an after-November” motto or a real and comprehensive conceptual idea, which determined the direction of foreign policy of the Czech republic for the next few years.
