Reading literacy and extensive reading programmes within second language education

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tématem rozvoje čtenářské gramotnosti ve výuce angličtiny na druhém stupni základní školy. Vnímání čtení v druhém jazyce na pozadí a vlivu čtenářských dovedností v mateřském jazyce je nedílnou součástí této práce, proto je zde navrhováno extenzivní čtení jako smysluplný přístup k výuce a učení druhého jazyka. Klíčovým tématem jsou výhody, které rozvoj čtenářské gramotnosti přináší s ohledem na celkový přístup ke gramotnosti ve společnosti, nevyjímaje kognitivní rozvoj, získávání všeobecných znalostí, zlepšení dovedností v psaní, gramatice a dalších lingvistických oblastech, které jsou nutné k pokroku v rámci ovládnutí jazyka. Komentáře k motivaci žáků a budování pozitivního vztahu ke čtení jsou též nedílnou součástí této práce. Dále je zmíněno, jak je rozvoj čtenářské gramotnosti zakotven v Rámcovém vzdělávacím programu a českém kurikulu s ohledem na národní standardy vyplývající ze Společného evropského referenčního rámce pro jazyky a také ze studií PISA. Všechny tyto poznatky jsou shrnuty v reflexi pilotního programu extenzivního čtení v rámci běžného vyučování angličtiny. Tyto postřehy jsou ve shodě se současnými pedagogickými trendy, které staví čtenářské kompetence a gramotnost mezi nejdůležitější kompetence ve vzdělávání stejně jako pro osobnostní růst v životě. Programy extenzivního čtení, které by mohly podpořit motivaci dětí, se tudíž jeví jako efektivní přístup k naplnění těchto nároků v rámci formálního vzdělávání.

Abstract:

The present study deals with the topic of reading literacy development within second language education. Perception of a second language reading and its practice in classes through intensive reading is put into relation with first language reading skills development. The influence of first language reading skills on second language reading are outlined, too. The thesis suggests that extensive reading might account for a meaningful approach to a second language teaching and learning. Of crucial concern is what benefits it brings to develop reading literacy with respect to overall approach to literacy in society, taking into account cognitive development, increasing general knowledge, improving writing, grammar and other linguistic areas which are necessary to make progress in language proficiency. Comments on learners’ motivation and building positive reading habits are an integral part of the thesis, too. Further, illustrations of how developing reading literacy is embodied in the Framework Educational Programme and Czech curriculum are mentioned with respect to the national standards described in the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages and also following from PISA studies. All these findings are wrapped up in a reflection of a pilot programme based on extensive reading within regular English classes. Moreover, the observations are in accordance with current pedagogical trends which put reading competences and literacy among the most essential competences for education as well as personal growth in life. Hence extensive reading programmes which might reinforce children’s motivation appear to be an effective approach within formal education as far as meeting the given demands is concerned.
