Condition of the first educational transition: socioeconomic status or cultural capital?

Abstract:

Téma této práce je zaměřeno na předpoklady první vzdělanostní tranzice, což je fenomén, který je v České republice specifický tím, že probíhá již v raném věku. Cílem této studie je popsat působení charakteru výchozí rodiny na uskutečnění prvního přechodu mezi úrovněmi vzdělávacího systému. Jaké by mělo být rodinné prostředí po stránce materiální i kulturní, aby dítě mělo šanci dostat se na víceleté gymnázium? Jak působí sociální a ekonomické faktory na proces rozhodování rodiny a jak působí tyto charakteristiky v momentě selekce prováděné samotnou školou? Práce vychází zejména z teorií vzdělanostní reprodukce Pierra Bourdieuho a Johna Goldthorpa, na jejichž základě je zpracována sekundární analýza dat z výzkumu PISA 2003. Výsledky analýzy ukazují, že vliv socioekonomického statusu na vzdělanostní tranzici je silnější než efekt kulturního kapitálu. Hlavním přínosem této práce pak je objasnění důvodu, proč jsou víceletá gymnázia převážně obsazena žáky z vyšších pater společenského žebříčku. Ukazuje se, že když už se dítě o vzdělanostní tranzici pokusí, tak má téměř stejně velkou šanci na úspěch, ať je z jakékoli společenské vrstvy. Tento výsledek by mohl nasvědčovat relativní otevřenosti víceletých gymnázií. V konečném důsledku však i přesto zůstává tento typ školy elitní institucí, protože efekt sociálních charakteristik působí velmi silně již v momentu rozhodování rodiny o tom, zda přihlásit dítě na víceleté gymnázium, což koresponduje s teorií racionální volby Johna Goldthorpa.

Abstract:

This paper is focused on conditions of the first educational transition in the Czech Educational System which, specifically in the Czech Republic, takes place in very low age. The goal of this report is to describe influence of a family background on the first educational transition between two educational levels. What kind of material and social resources is required to enable a child to succeed in passing the entrance examination to the general lower secondary grammar school? How do the social and economic factors influence the decission of a family and how do they affect a selection of pupils carried out by that schools themselves? The work is based on theories of educational reproduction by Pierre Bourdieu and John Goldthorpe. The secondary analysis of data from the research PISA 2003 is carried out on the basis of these theories. The results of analysis indicate that the influence of socioeconomic status of pupils’ families is stronger than the effect of cultural capital of those families. The main contribution of this work is the explanation of reasons why the general lower secondary grammar schools are in a major portion attended by children from families with higher socioeconomic status. The conclusion is that if the pupils try to get threw the first educational transition, they have the same chance to succeed no matter which social class they belong to. This could indicate that the institution of the general lower secondary grammar schools is opened to anyone independently on a socioeconomic status. Despite these facts, this kind of schools still appear as the elite institutions because the social characteristics of families strongly affect from very early moment of making decision about enrolling child to this type of school. These results correspond with the rational choice theory by John Goldthorpe.
