Managers and their behaviour in recreational sports: a study of tennis tournament players

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je na základě kvalitativního výzkumu zjistit, jaký má dopad účast na tenisových turnajích na manažera a jeho pracovní život. Dalším cílem práce je zjistit, jak manažeři reflektují vztah mezi rekreačním tenisovým turnajem a jejich prací. Teoretická a praktická část se soustředila na oblasti, které hrají roli v pracovním životě manažera. Kromě samotného vlivu tenisu na práci manažera se jednalo například o emoce, které mohou být významným faktorem při práci manažera. Dalšími oblastmi byly konfliktní situace, týmová spolupráce či zvládání krizových situací, což je pro manažera důležité například při mimořádných situacích, které nemůže v podniku ovlivnit. Praktická část byla provedena metodou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů s celkem devíti manažery. Bylo vyzkoumáno, že díky letitým zkušenostem si manažer častěji přenáší své zkušenosti a poznatky spíše do tenisového prostředí nežli naopak. To je ale do jisté míry dáno věkem dotazovaných manažerů. Jejich účast na tenisových turnajích jim mnohdy kompenzuje některé aspekty jejich práce a zároveň se na nich manažeři procvičují v oblastech, které hrají roli v jejich manažerské funkci.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is based on qualitative research to find out an impact of participation in tennis tournaments on the manager and his work-life. Another goal of the thesis is to find out how managers reflect on a relationship between a recreational tennis tournament and their work. The theoretical and practical part is focused on areas that play a role in the manager's work-life. Besides the actual influence of tennis on manager´s work-life, there is a description of emotions that can be as much influential in their work-life. There are other areas described such as conflict situations, teamwork or crisis management, that are important for the manager, for example, in emergencies that he cannot influence in the company. The practical part was conducted by the method of semi-structured interviews with a total of nine managers. It was found out that thanks to years of experience, the manager more often transfers his experience and knowledge from work to the tennis environment rather than the other way. However, it could be due to the age of the interviewed managers. On the other hand, the participation of managers in tennis tournaments often compensates them some aspects of their work and at the same time, the managers can practice in areas that play a role in their managerial function.
