Computer adaptatioin of Verbal reasoning test in the context of specific intelligence factors

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce byla psaná za účelem přispět k poznatkům o psychometrických vlastnostech počítačové adaptace Testu verbálního uvažování, která vznikla na půdě Centra experimentální psychologie a kognitivních věd Psychologického ústavu Filozofické fakulty Masarykovy univerzity. Test verbálního uvažování se nachází na webové platformě Hypothesis. Cílem práce bylo prozkoumat možné vztahy tohoto testu k schopnostem na obecné i specifické úrovni. Byly očekávány vztahy k prostorovým, verbálním a obecným rozumovým schopnostem. Výzkumný vzorek se skládal z 75 vysokoškolských studentů či absolventů ve věku 19 až 35 let (52 % žen a 48 % mužů), o průměru věku 24 let. Kromě Testu verbálního uvažování byly využity tyto nástroje: slovní analogie, mentální rotace kostky a vizuální analogie v podobě Ravenových matric. Získaná data byla zpracována regresní analýzou. Výsledkem bylo objevení dvou prediktorů výkonu v Testu verbálního uvažování, a to v podobě verbálních a prostorových schopností. Naopak vztah s obecnými rozumovými schopnostmi nalezen nebyl.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis was written to contribute to the knowledge of the psychometric properties of the computer adaptation of the Verbal reasoning test, which originated at the Center of experimental psychology and cognitive sciences of the Psychological Institute of the Faculty of Arts of the Masaryk University. The Verbal reasoning test runs on the Hypothesis web platform. The aim of the thesis was to investigate possible relationships of this test with capabilities at both general and specific level. Relationships to spatial, verbal and general intelligence were expected. The research sample consisted of 75 university students or graduates aged 19 to 35 (52 % of women and 48 % of men), with an average age of 24 years. In addition to the Verbal reasoning test, the following tools were used: verbal analogy, cube mental rotations, and visual analogy in the form of Raven matrices. The obtained data were processed by regression analysis. Two performance predictors were discovered in the Verbal reasoning test, namely verbal and spatial abilities. On the contrary, the relationship with general intelligence was not discovered
