Modernisation of society in today’s Slovakia as a precondition for formation of nationalism

Abstract:

This thesis describes a structuralist view of society and the changes it has undergone starting as an agricultural society and transforming into modern industrial society. The analysis itself is based on works by Ernest Gellner. The thesis takes the form of a case study which describes particular predispositions of modernization of society while applying historical facts about the territory now known as Slovakia to analyzed theory. The change in social situation is most visible when focusing on how different conditions for nationalistic ideas to succeed in social and political life were created within the particular analyzed territory. The theoretical part of the thesis also introduces ideas from other famous scientists from the field of nationalism and compares them to those of Gellner. Historical facts are then applied to Gellner’s theory itself. These facts were gathered by renowned historians and they are mostly concerning the period when the territory being studied fell under Habsburg rule, the period of the so-called Austro-Hungarian Empire.

Abstract:

Táto bakalárska práca sa venuje popisu štrukturalistického poňatia prechodu od agrárnej spoločnosti k spoločnosti modernej a industriálnej. Tento pohľad je analyzovaný na základe diela Ernesta Gellnera. Práca je prípadovou štúdiou, ktorá jednotlivé predispozície modernizácie spoločnosti popisuje prostredníctvom aplikácie historických faktov o vývoji spoločnosti na území, ktoré dnes poznáme ako Slovensko. Popisom obmeny spoločenských pomerov je v práci načrtnuté porovnanie vytvárania predpokladov pre úspech nacionalistických myšlienok v sociálnom a politickom živote na danom území. Práca sa zaoberá v teoretickej časti tiež porovnaním myšlienok ďalších teoretikov nacionalizmu. V časti aplikácie faktov na teóriu čerpá z diel popredných historikov zaoberajúcich sa históriou študovaného územia, ktoré v kľúčovom období patrilo do habsburskej monarchie, respektíve Rakúsko-Uhorska.
