Implementation of a native Mac OS X YSoft SafeQ printing client

Abstract:

The thesis elaborates on the development of a new implementation of software "YSoft SafeQ Client", which is the software component responsible for sending print jobs to the "YSoft SafeQ" printing system. The existing implementation of the Client, which was used as a base for analyses in this thesis, is based on Java and Swing. It exhibits limitations in the looks of the application (user interface) and in its integration on the Mac OS X platform. The main aim of the thesis is to create a new implementation using native platform API in order to improve the looks of the application (to gain access to the native user interface elements of Mac OS X) and to boost the integration on the platform. The thesis analyzes the existing implementation and then elaborates on the available technologies compatible with the aims of the thesis (access to native API), as set in the thesis requirements. Technologies for new implementation are chosen and implemented with respect to meeting requirements of lower memory footprint, faster application startup and better speed of operation. The new implementation based on these technologies also meets the goals of better integration (running in background, access to the Keychain password storage), supports three authentication methods and enables navigation in the Project Accounting of YSoft SafeQ Server. The new implementation resulting from the work on this thesis meets the goals set in thesis requirements. Compared to the original version it boasts more than a half smaller memory footprint and a slightly better speed. The new architecture brought by this implementation also enables wider use of technologies present in Mac OS X, which were not accessible from the original implementation.

Abstract:

Práca sa zaoberá vývojom novej implementácie tlačového klienta YSoft SafeQ Client, t.j. softvéru na odosielanie tlačových úloh do tlačového systému YSoft SafeQ. V pôvodnej implementácii postavenej nad Javou a Swing existovali limitácie vo vzhľade a v integrácii aplikácie na platforme Mac OS X. Cieľom práce bolo vytvoriť novú implementáciu, využívajúcu natívne API platformy, za účelom dosiahnutia natívneho vzhľadu (prístupu k natívnym grafickým prvkom platformy) a lepšej integrácie aplikácie na tejto platforme. Po analýze súčasnej implementácie a následnej analýze dostupných technológií umožňujúcich prístup k natívnemu API vyberám tie, od ktorých očakávam relatívne najmenšiu pamäťovú/diskovú náročnosť a najvyššiu rýchlosť spúšťania a behu aplikácie. Súčasne realizujem ciele lepšej integrácie (beh na pozadí, prístup k úložisku hesiel Keychain) a implementujem základné funkcie pre autentifikáciu a navigáciu v projektovom účtovaní YSoft SafeQ v rozsahu popísanom v zadaní práce. V práci sa podarilo vyvinúť novú implementáciu podľa požiadavkov; oproti pôvodnej má viac ako polovičnú pamäťovú náročnosť a mierne lepšiu rýchlosť. Zároveň sa otvorili širšie možnosti využitia funkcionalít poskytovaných platformou Mac OS X, čo je dôležité pre ďalší rozvoj aplikácie na tejto platforme.
