Life strategy of Gammarus fossarum in an intermittent stream

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zpracování literární rešerše k biologii druhu blešivec potoční Gammarus fossarum Koch 1835, jeho habitatovým preferencím a reakci na vysychání. V praktické části práce byla sledována sezónní dynamika populace G. fossarum na Gránickém potoce u Znojma (2,5 km nad ústím) v průběhu roku 2005 (5. 4.-11. 11.). V tomto roce došlo dvakrát v letním období k letnímu vyschnutí toku. Odběry byly prováděny kvantitativně Kubíčkovým bentometrem ze 6 odběrových míst tvořených třemi různými páry habitatů označených jako břehy, peřeje a tůně ve 2 - 4 týdenních intervalech. Všichni blešivci byli rozděleni do 4 pohlavních kategorií (juvenilní, samci, samice bez vajíček a samice s vajíčky) a změřena délka jejich těla. Dle kalibračního souboru dat (z multihabitatové semikvantitativní metody PERLA) byly sestaveny příslušné regresní rovnice a podle nich vypočítána biomasa na jednotlivých habitatech v průběhu sezony. Na kalibračním souboru dat byla ověřena i lineární závislost délky hlavy a těla blešivců. Zjištěné délkováhové vztahy pro jednotlivé kategorie blešivce potočního byly porovnány s výsledky zjištěnými v jiné studii. Abundance v jarních měsících na všech typech habitatů s postupující sezónou rostla. Po vyschnutí se abundance blešivců přiblížila k nule. Znovu byli pozorováni blešivci ve větším počtu až od konce září. Jarních hodnot abundance nebylo do konce sezóny dosaženo. Největší růst počtu blešivců po vyschnutí byl zaznamenán na březích a peřejích. Zatímco v první části sezóny před vyschnutím byla nejvíce zastoupena skupina juvenilních jedinců, na podzim po vyschnutí dominovali adultní jedinci. Největší množství biomasy i abundance bylo zaznamenáno na březích, nejméně na peřejích. U blešivců z driftových vzorků, kteří byli zpracováni podobně jako jedinci z bentometrů, byla zjištěna rozdílná velikostní struktura i pohlavní struktura před a po vyschnutí. V první polovině sezony převládali malí a juvenilní jedinci, ve druhé to byli větší adulti.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was the processing of a bibliographic search for the biology of species Gammarus fossarum Koch 1835, its habitat preferences and response to drying up of the stream. In the practical part of the study seasonal changes in population of G. fossarum in the Gránický brook (2.5 km above the confluence of the brook with the River Dyje) near the town of Znojmo in 2005 (from 5th April to 11th November) were studied. The stream dried up twice in the summer 2005. The quantitative samples were taken by Kubíček benthometer in six places, comprising three pairs of mesohabitats (the banks, rifles and pools) in the intervals of 2 to 4 weeks. All specimens were classified into four sex groups: juvenils, males, females without eggs and females with eggs. Individuals from calibration date collection (sampled by multihabitat semiquantitative method PERLA) were measured, dried and weighted. Acquired values of dry mass were used for making graphs and length-dry mass regressions. These regressions were used for biomass calculation for every mesohabitat during the sampling season 2005. Other gammarid specimens were measured only (body length and head heigth). Length-dry mass relationships were settled for each sex group and can be used for population of this species living in Gránický brook. Results were compared with other study. Abundance in the spring months on all types of mesohabitats grew with the processing of the season. After drought the abundance was very low. After that, higher number o fgammarids were not observed till the end of september. Spring abundance values were not reached until the end of the season. The largest increase in the number of gammarids during autumn was observed on banks and riffles. The most abundant group before brook´s drying up was juvenils, after disturbance adults were. The highest abundance and biomass were observed in banks, the lowest in riffles. Individuals sampled by drift were classified into four sex groups and measured too. There was a change between sexual and size structure of drift population during the season. In the first part of the season juvenils and small adults were the most abundant, in the second part larger adults were.
