The display case of cinematography in the first decade of independent Czechoslovakia

Abstract:

Výstava soudobé kultury byla zrealizována k jubilejnímu desátému výročí založení samostatného Československa a měla za úkol ukázat úroveň a vyspělost mladého českého státu. Záštitu nad výstavou převzal prezident T. G. Masaryk. Účelem bylo vystavovat jen to, co vzniklo na půdě Československého státu od roku 1918. Součástí výstavy byla také filmová sekce a v průběhu výstavy bylo v provozu Výstavní kino. Práce nastiňuje domácí i zahraniční výstavy, které mohly být vzorem a motivací pro uspořádání Výstavy soudobé kultury v Brně. Další část se věnuje organizační struktuře a členění VSK, ideovým cílům a reálným výsledkům výstavy. Těžiště práce leží ve filmové sekci, její organizaci v rámci celé výstavy, v tom co zahrnovala a jak a kde bylo postaveno Výstavní kino, jak vypadalo a co se v něm odehrávalo. Závěr práce se pokouší uchopit podstatu filmové části výstavy, popsat její charakter a zodpovědět otázky, které s k ní váží.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s diploma is focused on the Exhibition of contemporary culture (Výstava soudobé kultury), which took place in Brno in 1928 on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of foundation of an independent Czechoslovak state. There were several preceding exhibitions on the Czech ground in the years 1791 to 1928. The big world exhibitions were organized in Paris and Chicago in closing years of the 19th century, in the era of the industrial revolution expansion. The idea of constructing a fair ground in Brno had evolved since as early as the end of 19th century, but the construction itself was not approved before the twenties of the 20th century. The modern area designed in the functionalist style grew in Brno between 1924 and 1928. About seventy pavilions and other buildings were constructed in favour of this action. Realization of the exhibition was put in trust of Výstavní akciová společnost. The objective of the exhibition was to display only articles that originated in the Czech lands between the years 1918 and 1928. The basic guiding principle was to exhibit new and originate products. A part of the exhibition was related to film production and survey of the Czech film production till 1928. Preparations of the cinematic exhibition took up more than one year. It contained film apparatuses, photos of first experiments with film carried out by Czech authors, blow-ups of film frames, photos from the movies, etc.
