The use of morphemic analysis as a means of supporting learners' text comprehension

Abstract:

The primary aim of this study was to determine whether morphemic analysis leads to learners? improved text comprehension. The secondary aim was to see whether learners achieve better recognition of morphologically more complex words. The two hypotheses were verified through experimental teaching of morphemic analysis and analysis of coursebooks used to teach English, with regard to morphological structures presented in the books and reading strategies introduced to learners. Experimental teaching consisted of one lesson dedicated to the introduction of the concept of morphemic analysis and nine other lessons presenting selected prefixes and suffixes grouped thematically in order to achieve better results. Pre- and post-tests included five reading comprehension tasks and ten tasks focusing on learners? understanding of selected affixed words and the correct translation of the words into learners? L1. Results of the experiment confirmed the first hypothesis, although only partially, since the results in reading comprehension were only slightly improved. The second hypothesis was not confirmed. Results concerning students? correct translation into their L1 were worse in the post-tests than in the pre-test. The paper concludes with a discussion of possible criteria affecting results of the experiment and brief recommendations regarding incorporating morphemic analysis into reading and vocabulary instruction.

Abstract:

Primárním cílem této práce bylo určit, zda využití morfematické analýzy vede ke zdokonalení porozumění textu. Druhotným cílem bylo zjistit, zda studenti dosahují lepších výsledků při rozpoznáván slov se složitější morfematickou strukturou. Tyto dvě hypotézy byly ověřovány pomocí experimentální výuky morfematické analýzy a analýzy učebnic využívaných pro výuku anglického jazyka s ohledem na morfematické struktury prezentované v rámci těchto učebnic a analýzy strategií určených pro čtení a porozumění textu. Experimentální výuka se skládala z jedné hodiny věnované uvedení podstaty morfematické analýzy a dalších devět hodin, v jejichž rámci byli studenti seznámeni s vybranými prefixy a sufixy v rámci jednotných tematických celků. Testování před a na konci experimentální výuky obsahovaly pět otázek týkajících se porozumění textu a deset otázek soustředících se na porozumění studentů jednotlivých slov obsahujících prefixy a sufixy, a jejich správný překlad do rodného jazyka studentů. Výsledky experimentu potvrdily první hypotézu pouze částečně, neboť výsledky části určené pro zhodnocení porozumění textu byly mírně zlepšené oproti výsledkům této části před experimentální výukou. Druhá hypotéza však potvrzena nebyla. Výsledky týkající se správného překladu slov do rodného jazyka studentů byly o něco horší na konci experimentu. Tato studie je zakončena zhodnocením výsledků a možných kritérií ovlivňujících výsledky tohoto experimentu a zároveň stručným doporučením týkajícího se začlenění výuky morfematické analýzy při výuce čtení a slovní zásoby.
