Professional career by people with Asperger Syndrome

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá problematikou profesní kariéry u osob s Aspergerovým syndromem. Na téma je pohlíženo z vývojové perspektivy. V prvním oddílu teoretické části práce jsou představeny pojmy kariéra a kariérový vývoj, dále jsou zde systematizovány teorie kariérového vývoje. Podrobněji rozebrány jsou teorie životní dráhy a duhy Donalda Supera, teorie ohraničení a kompromisu Lindy S. Gottfredsonové a teorie konstrukce kariéry Marka L. Savickase, které tvoří teoretický rámec práce. Druhý oddíl teoretické části práce se zaměřuje na základní informace týkající se Aspergerova syndromu, na specifika vzdělávací a profesní cesty lidí s Aspergerovým syndromem a obsahuje také shrnutí výsledků zahraničních výzkumů relevantních k tématu celé práce. Empirická část práce je koncipována jako kvalitativní výzkum, jehož se účastnilo osm lidí s diagnózou Aspergerův syndrom ve věku 18 až 35 let. Cílem výzkumu bylo odpovědět na otázku, jak lidé s Aspergerovým syndromem vnímají a prožívají svůj kariérový vývoj. Data byla získávána prostřednictvím polostrukturovaných rozhovorů a dále analyzována pomocí interpretativní fenomenologické analýzy (IPA). Výsledky výzkumu naznačují, že lidé s Aspergerovým syndromem si velmi cení svého osobního rozvoje. Je pro ně charakteristická vysoká vnitřní motivace ke studiu oborů, jež je zajímají, a vysoká aspirační úroveň – jejich častým cílem je vysokoškolské studium na úrovni magisterského studijního programu. Aktivně se také angažují ve vyhledávání informací o svých studijních a profesních možnostech. Obtíže, s nimiž se setkávají na své vzdělávací a profesní cestě, jsou v některých ohledech specifické ve srovnání s běžnou populací, avšak jejich obraz se nezdá být jednotný pro celou skupinu. Stejně tak používané strategie zvládání se u jednotlivých účastníků výzkumu různí. Závěrem je možné konstatovat, že v praktické práci s těmito lidmi je třeba ještě více než u běžné populace volit přístup šitý na míru individuálním potřebám a schopnostem každého jednotlivce.

Abstract:

The diploma work is focused on career development of people with the diagnosis of Asperger´s Syndrome. In the first section of it´s theoretical part there are concepts „career“ and „career development“ explained. Also the career development theories are mentioned and systemized. Donald Super´s theory of life span and life space, Linda S. Gottfredson´s theory of circumscription and compromise and Mark L. Savicas´s theory of career construction are presented in a bigger detail, because they constitute a theoretical framework I use in the whole diploma work. The second section of the theoretical part focuses on Asperger´s Syndrome and basic information about it. It also contains results of empirical studies which were realized earlier and which are somehow related to the career development of the defined group. The empirical part of the work is conceived as a qualitative study, in which eight people aged 18 to 35 took part. All the participants were in past officialy diagnosed as having Asperger´s Syndrome. The aim of the study was to answer the question how individuals with Asperger´s Syndrome feel and perceive their career development and how they think about it. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews and then analysed by means of the phenomenological interpretative analysis (IPA). The results of the study imply that individuals with Asperger´s Syndrome largely value their own personal growth. For these people high intrinsic motivation to study the branches they focus on is characteristic. Their educational aspirations are also high – they often plan to study (or already study) on the university and want to achieve the master´s degree. People with Asperger´s Syndrome also actively participate in exploring educational and vocational options they have. The difficulties they encounter during education and professional career are specific in certain areas but they do not form a coherent picture that would be typical for the whole group. Also the coping strategies they use are different. It´s possible to say that in practical work with people with this diagnosis it is needed to tailor all the arrangements to the individual needs and abilities of each of them.
