Images and Texts in Postmodernism – The Medium of Book: Book Trailers, Emoji Poems and Book Translations

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá vztahem obrazu a textu v postmoderní době. Obraz se dostává do popředí a v některých případech nahrazuje text. Příkladem může být vyhlášení emoji brečícího smíchy jako slovo roku 2015 podle Oxfordského slovníku. Dále také vznikají emoji překlady knih a emoji poezie. Dalším případem jsou knižní trailery, které se nacházejí ve specifické pozici, protože využívají jazyk filmových trailerů (obraz) – a to i přestože se jedná o upoutávku na tištěnou knihu (text). Cílem mé práce je analyzovat vztah obrazu a textu v knižních trailerech a emoji poezii a překladech knih. Moje práce se dělí na tři hlavní části. První je teoretický úvod, ve kterém čerpám z teorií R. Barthese, D. Strinatiho a W. J. T. Mitchella. V druhé části se zaměřím na fenomén knižního traileru. Využívám například práce Grøna, Vollanse, Basaraby a Voigt k definici a uvedení krátké historie tohoto fenoménu. Zabývám se i vztahem knižních trailerů ke zdrojové knize. Následně uvádím analýzu konkrétních knižních trailerů se zaměřením na jejich využití textu a na jejich vztah ke zdrojové knize. Poslední kapitola je věnována emoji, zde uvádím jejich definici, krátkou historii a dále se zaměřuji na to, jak mohou nést význam – konkrétně se zabývám jejich pozicí jako samostatného jazyka, jejich gramatikou a emoji a nejednoznačností. Zde vycházím především z teorie M. Danesiho. Následně analyzuji konkrétní projekty, které pracují s emoji a médiem knihy: Emoji Dick, The Grey Bird, The Book from the Ground a Bible Emoji. Zaměřím se především na vztah obrazu a textu v těchto dílech, u emoji překladů také na vztah ke zdrojovému textu. Ve své práci se pokouším zodpovědět následující otázky: Je knižní trailer intermediem nebo součástí transmediálního vyprávění? Jak pracuje knižní trailer s textem? Může knižní trailer nahradit textové anotace? Nahrazují emoji opravdu slova nebo je doplňují? Jedná se o svébytný „obrázkový jazyk“ nebo je jejich spolupráce s textem nutná? Jsou oba zkoumané fenomény projevem dominance obrazu v postmoderně?

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the relation of the image and the text in the postmodern era. Image dominates, and in some cases, it replaces the text. Example of this tendency is an announcement of emoji Face with tears of joy as Oxford Dictionary´s Word of Year in 2015. Further, emoji translations of book emerge accompanied by emoji poetry. Another example is the book trailer, which is placed in specific position because it uses the language of movie trailers (image) – though they are trailers for printed books (text). The goal of my thesis is the analysis of the relationship between image and text in book trailers and in emoji poetry and translations. My thesis is divided into three main chapters. The first one is the theoretical part, in which I use theories of R. Barthes, D. Strinati a W. J. T. Mitchell. In the second section, I focus on the phenomena of book trailers. Firstly, I use texts of Grøn, Vollans, Basaraba, and Voigt to define book trailers and to present a brief history of them. Further, I explore the relationship between book trailers and their source books. I also analyze specific book trailers by focusing on the use of text in them. The last chapter is dedicated to emojis. I focus on their brief history and on their bearing meaning – particularly I focus on their position as a language, their grammar, and their ambiguity. In this part, I mostly use the theory of M. Danesi. Further, I analyze four projects (Emoji Dick, The Grey Bird, The Book from the Ground, Bible Emoji), which use emoji and the medium of the book. I focus on how emoji and text are related to each other and also how is emoji translation linked to its source text. In my thesis I try to answer following questions: Are book trailers an intermedium or the part of the transmedia storytelling? How book trailers employ text? Can book trailers replace text's annotation? Can emojis really replace words or do they complete texts? Is it independent „pictorial language“ or is their collaboration with text necessary? Are both examined phenomena symptoms of postmodern domination of image?
