The role of beta-endorphins in the effects of ritualized behavior on anxiety decrease

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce bylo prozkoumat mechanismus snižování úzkosti pomocí ritualizovaného chování. Jedním z možných mechanismů je aktivace vnitřního opioidního systému prediktivním kódováním. Přestože role tohoto systému je především analgetická, má také vnitřní systém odměny. Mezi účinky tohoto systému patří rov-něž fyziologické snížení úzkosti. Hypotéza, že ritualizované chování zvyšuje práh bolesti, byla zkoumána experimentálně. Výsledek výzkumu je nejednoznačný. Hlavní hypotéza se přímo nepotvrdila, ale výsledky byly v očekávaném směru. Vzhledem k malému vzorku účastníků této studie je však zapotřebí dalšího výzkumu, který by tento trend potvrdil a poskytl přesvědčivější výsledky.

Abstract:

The aim of the diploma thesis was to explore the mechanism of reducing anxiety by ritualized behaviour. One possible mechanism is the activation of the internal opioid system through predictive coding. Although the role of this system is primarily analgesic, it also functions an internal reward system and the effects of this system include the physiological reduction of anxiety. The hypothesis that ritualized behaviour increases pain threshold was examined experimentally. The outcome of this testing is ambiguous. The main hypothesis was not directly confirmed but the results were in the expected direction. However, given the small sample of participants in this study, further research is needed to confirm this trend and provide more conclusive results.
