Somatic idioms in the context of cultural history. A comparison between the Norwegian and the Czech language

Abstract:

The topic of this thesis is somatic idioms in the Norwegian and Czech languages. Generally defined, idioms are expressions whose figurative meaning is cannot be gleaned directly from the literal meaning of individual words in the phrase. Somatic idioms are those which contain a part of the human body as the base word. The goal of this thesis is to compare Norwegian and Czech culture with each other on the basis of somatic idioms. For this purpose a corpus of more than 1600 phrases was excerpted from phrasal dictionaries, guides and text corpora. The analysis of this selection is grounded in conceptual metaphor theory and cognitive linguistics. As can be seen from the theoretical discussion in the first part of this thesis, idioms can be motivated by metaphor, metonymy or conventional knowledge. The task of this thesis is to examine the corpus of somatic idioms to uncover the motivation behind these expressions. The thesis is divided into two parts: the first part is a discussion of the theory of idioms and conceptual metaphors. The second part is concerned with the analysis of the somatic idioms themselves, and comprises five parts divided thematically by head, torso, hand, leg and other body parts.

Abstract:

Tématem této práce jsou somatické idiomy v norském a českém jazyce. Obecná definice idiomu říká, že je to takový výraz, jehož celkový význam nelze odvodit z jeho jednotlivých částí. Cílem práce je odhalit rozdíly, nebo naopak styčné body mezi norskou a českou kulturou na podkladu somatických idiomů. Somatické idiomy jsou takové idiomy, které obsahují jako bázové slovo název některé části lidského těla. Na základě frazeologických slovníků, příruček a korpusů byl pro tuto práci vytvořen korpus čítající přes 1600 frazeologických jednotek. Samotná analýza korpusu se opírá především o teorii konceptuálních metafor a kognitivní lingvistiku. Jak vyplývá z diskuze v teoretické části této práce, může být motivace idiomů trojího druhu – metaforou, metonymií nebo konvencí. Našim úkolem je analyzovat korpus somatických idiomů tak, abychom odhalili motivaci, která se za těmito výrazy skrývá. Práce je členěna na dvě hlavní části. V první, teoretické části se zabýváme teoretickou diskuzí nad definicí idiomu. Rovněž podáváme přehled o teorii konceptuálních metafor a stanovujeme kategorie pro analýzu. Vzhledem k tomu, že při sestavování korpusu byly využity různé slovníky a elektronické korpusy, věnujeme se i jim. Druhá část se týká samotné analýzy somatických idiomů. Analýza je rozdělena na pět částí dle tematických celků – hlava, trup, ruka, noha a ostatní části těla (seznam idiomů viz přílohy).
