Shunga and the question of its use from the consumers’ perspective

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to create a solid foundation for further shunga research. Mainly, I am going to examine for what purpose consumers procured shunga. Firstly, I am going to delineate the problematic parts of shunga research. Namely problems with terminology used for reffering to shunga and problems with research based on shunga imagery as such. Afterwards I am going to focus on comparing various researchers and their views about the use of shunga. In the last part I shift the focus of my thesis more towards answering the question of (im)possibility of female audience.

Abstract:

Cieľom tejto práce je položiť ucelenejšiu základňu pre ďalší výskum šungy. V práci skúmam otázku toho za akým účelom si konzumenti šungu zadovažovali. Najprv bude načrtnutá problematickosť definície pojmov označujúcich šungu, a problematickosť skúmania obrazov šungy ako takých. Po tomto načrtnutí základných problémov sa zameriam na porovnávanie rôznych názorov bádateľov o použití šungy. V poslednej kapitole sa zameranie práce presunie na samotných konzumentov, menovite na otázku (ne)možnosti ženského publika.
