Study of the surface charge recombination in dielectric barrier discharges

Abstract:

First part of the dissertation thesis deals with a so far undocumented phenomena taking place in the passive phase of the helium discharge with coplanar configuration of electrodes. A very weak light emission (10-3 of active discharge signal) was detected and associated with the movement of electrons. This movement was initiated by the influence of inhomogeneously distributed surface charge – CRE (Charge relaxation event). This phenomena was investigated by means of optical emission spectroscopy, using a technique of phase-resolved single photon counting. During the charge relaxation event, a broad continuum appeared in the optical emission spectra, consisting of bremsstrahlung radiation and amplified luminescence of the dielectric barrier. The presented analysis suggests that the bremsstrahlung radiation originated from slow electrons colliding with neutral helium atoms. The fitting procedure we developed reproduced well the observed shape of the continuum. Moreover, it provides a method for the determination of electric field strength in the discharge during this particular phase. The electric field reached 1 kV.cm−1 during the charge relaxation event. As part of the study of weak light signals related to charge recombination, thermoluminescence of Al2O3 sub-micron powders treated in DCSBD (Diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge) was investigated. Owing to the use of sub-micron powder with high specific surface, a substantial increase of detected thermoluminescence (TL) signal was achieved. TL measurements provided the possibility to investigate the population of intrinsic electrons/holes in trapping states of dielectric. The results presented in this work cover a wide range of experimental conditions used for plasma treatment of powder: exposure time, working gas composition, step-annealing, laser exposition or aging time. This comprehensive set of data provides a rather uncoventional view on the plasma-mediated material changes.

Abstract:

Prvá časť dizertačnej práce sa zaoberá doteraz nezdokumentovaným javom prebiehajúcim v pasívnej fáze héliového výboja v koplanárnej konfigurácii elektród. Popisuje pozorovanie veľmi slabej svetelnej emisie (10-3 signálu aktívneho výboja), spojenej s pohybom elektrónov. Tento pohyb je iniciovaný pôsobením nehomogénne rozloženého povrchového náboja sme nazvali CRE (z angl. charge relaxation event). Jav bol skúmaný optickou emisnou spektroskopiou pomocou fázovo rozlíšeného čítania jednotlivých fotónov. Počas CRE bolo pozorované široké spojité spektrum pozostávajúce z brzdného žiarenia a zosilnenej luminiscencie dielektrika. Na základe prezentovaných výsledkov bol formulovaný záver, že pozorované brzdné žiarenie je generované pomalými elektrónmi interagujúcimi s neutrálnymi atómami hélia. Vyvinutá simulačná procedúra veľmi presne reprodukuje pozorovaný tvar spojitého žiarenia a sprostredkováva metódu vhodnú pre výpočet elektrického poľa počas CRE. Veľkosť elektrického poľa zaznamenaného počas CRE dosahovala hodnoty 1 kV.cm-1. V rámci štúdia slabých svetelných signálov súvisiacich s rekombináciou náboja bola preskúmaná aj termoluminiscencia Al2O3 sub-mikrónových práškov opracovaných v DCSBD (z angl. diffuse coplanar surface barrier discharge). Vďaka použitiu sub-mikrónových práškov s veľkým špecifickým povrchom bolo dosiahnuté výrazné zvýšenie detekovaného termoluminiscenčného (TL) signálu. TL merania sprostredkovali možnosť preskúmania populácie intrinsických elektrónov/dier vo väzobných stavoch dielektrika. Výsledky prezentované v tejto práci pokrývajú širokú škálu experimentálnych podmienok použitých pre opracovanie Al2O3 prášku: čas opracovania, zloženie pracovného plynu, krokové žíhanie, laserovú expozíciu alebo starnutie úpravy. Tento obsiahly súbor dát tak sprostredkováva pomerne nekonvenčný uhol pohľadu na plazmou indukované zmeny materiálu.
