Michel de Montaigne: Scepticism in the Apology for Raymond Sebond

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je za pomoci sekundární literatury vypracovat a předložit interpretaci Apologie Raimunda ze Sabundy se zaměřením na tato témata: a) Skepticismus - v tomto kontextu Montaignovy argumenty proti spolehlivosti lidského rozumu a vnímání. Z nich pak pramení názor, že člověk svými prostředky nemůže získat poznatky o světě s jistotou. b) Fideismus - nauka, že právě kvůli nespolehlivosti smyslového poznání a nadřazenosti víry nad rozumem je možné důvěřovat pouze poznání získanému z Boží milosti, zjevením. c) Koncepce člověka, jenž není, navzdory svému přesvědčení, v kosmu ničím důležitým ani velkolepým.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to formulate an interpretation of the Apology for Raymond Sebond with the assistance of secondary sources. Topics on which this thesis is focusing are a) Scepticism - in this context in the form of Montaigne’s arguments against the reliability of human reason and senses. This implies that humans cannot, with their own abilities, attain knowledge of the world with certainty. b) Fideism - the view that since senses are unreliable and faith is superior to reason, it is possible to trust only the knowledge acquired by the grace of God, divine revelation. c) Conception of human beings, who are, contrary to their belief, nothing indispensable or spectacular in the universe.
