Analysis of the changes of representation of gender in the Sluníčko magazine

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá genderovou analýzou dětského časopisu Sluníčko v pěti různých časových obdobích (dělených na dekády počínající rokem 1970). Práce se dělí na tři základní části – na část teoretickou, metodologickou a analytickou. Základem teoretické části jsou teorie Sandry Harding genderové univerzum a Ervinga Goffmana „předvádění genderu“. Analýza byla uskutečněna na 25 číslech časopisu Sluníčko, jak na jeho vizuální, tak na obsahové rovině. V analýze ilustrací jsem se soustředila na obrazové znázornění společenského postavení jednotlivých postav s přihlédnutím k jejich pohlaví a případného porušování nebo potvrzování očekávaných genderových vlastností ve vizuálním zobrazení. Textová analýza se zabývala charaktery postav, dějem příběhů, pohádek či básní, stejně jako výroky, které potvrzovaly či narušovaly předpoklady o charakteristikách mužů a žen. Rovněž se textová část analýzy zabývala nerovným užíváním jazyka při oslovování. Cílem práce je snaha nalézt odpovědi na otázky, zda se změnilo zobrazování mužských a ženských stereotypních charakteristik a jejich sociálních rolí v čase. Výsledkem je několik konkrétních příkladů odvětví činnosti jedince, charakteristik postav a jejich společenského postavení, ve kterých došlo k pokroku v rovnějším zobrazování žen a mužů. Rovněž ale byly v prezentacích objeveny stagnace či dokonce kroky zpět.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with gender analysis of children's magazine Sluníčko in five different time periods (divided for decades since 1970). The work is divided into three parts - theoretical, methodological and analytical. The basics of the theoretical part are the theories from Sandra Harding „Gender Universe“ and Erving Goffman "Gender display". The analysis was carried out on twenty issues of magazine Sluníčko, as on its visual level, so the content level. In the analysis of illustrations I focused on figurative representation of social status of the characters with regard to their sex and possible violations or to confirm the expected gender characteristics in the visual display. Textual analysis dealt with the characters, stories, fairytales and poems, as well as statements that confirmed or disrupted assumptions about the characteristics of men and women. Also, the text part of the analysis dealt with the use of uneven language in addressing. The aim of the work is to find answers to the questions whether the display of stereotypical masculine and feminine characteristics and their social roles has changed over time. The result is a few specific examples of the activities of individual, characteristics of the characters and their social positions in which the progress towards equitable representation of women and men has been made. But the stagnation or even steps back were also discovered in presentations.
