The perspective of peer workers of harm reduction services for drug users on their own motivation to work in the service with a focus on meeting the basic psychological needs of competence, authenticity and relationships

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá otázkou vnitřní motivace peer pracovníků harm reduction (HR) služeb pro uživatele drog, konkrétně naplňování potřeb autenticity, kompetence a vztahů podle sebedeterminační teorie motivace Ryana a Deciho. Teoretická část uvádí do kontextu téma motivace a šířeji rozebírá sebedeterminační teorii. Poskytuje informace o osobách užívajících drogy a aktuálním přístupu k nim, zejména pohledem HR. Nakonec shrnuje aktuální české i zahraniční studie o peer práci. Výzkumná část představuje výsledky kvalitativního šetření založeného na polostrukturovaných rozhovorech s 10 peer pracovníky HR služeb. Rozhovory byly analyzovány pomocí technik zakotvené teorie – otevřeného a axiálního kódování. Z rozhovorů vyplynulo 12 kategorií, které byly následně uvedeny do vzájemných vztahů. Hlavní kategorií je „Participace není dokonalá, ale zatím nikdo nic lepšího nevymyslel“. Ukázalo se, že přes limity, kterými jsou legislativní neukotvenost peer práce, charakteristiky cílové skupiny a heterogenita názorů, má pro pracovníky participace existenční i „vyšší“ přínos, zejména ve formě seberozvoje, stabilizace a vytváření smysluplných vztahů.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with intrinsic motivation among peer workers in harm reduction (HR) social services for people who use drugs. It is focused specifically on the fulfilment of the basic psychological needs, based on the self-determination theory by Ryan and Deci – authenticity, competence and relatedness. Theoretical part introduces motivation and self-determination theory. It describes people who use drugs and current approach towards them, especially HR, and refers to Czech and foreign studies on peer work. The research is qualitative, based on semi-structured interviews with 10 peer workers in HR services. Interviews were analysed using techniques of the grounded theory – open and axial coding. The findings recognised 12 categories, which were then linked together. Main category was named “Participation is not perfect, but nobody has come with anything better yet”. It says, that despite the limits – legislative non-definition, specifics of the target group and heterogeneity of the views, participation is beneficial for the workers existentially and it also gives them some higher sense in self-development, gaining stability and creating meaningful relationships.
