Buddhism in Burma: Relations between politics and religion

Abstract:

Práce je případovou studií zabývající se vztahy náboženství a politiky v Barmě především postkoloniálního období. Barma je země, kde má na fungování společnosti vliv jak nedemokratický vojenský režim, tak nejpočetnější náboženství, therávádový buddhismus. Politika a buddhismus v Barmě vstupují do vzájemných interakcí, které vytvářejí různé podoby vztahů. Cílem práce je popsat jakých podob vzájemné vztahy nabývají a jak jsou jejich prostřednictvím formováni hlavní aktéři. V teoretické části je představen způsob, jakým je s tématikou vztahu náboženství a politiky pracováno v odborné západní literatuře. Následně je definováno, jakým způsobem je se vztahy náboženství a politiky v rámci textu pracováno. Celá práce je inspirována relačním přístupem ke studiu sociálních jevů. Základní jednotkou analýzy jsou proto vztahy mezi aktéry. Pro práci jsou stěžejní dva aktéři, a to sice buddhistická sangha a politická elita. Mezi těmito aktéry jsou v rámci práce identifikovány čtyři typy vztahů, které se v průběhu moderní historie vyskytly. Díky těmto vztahům nabývají aktéři různé charakteristiky. Těmito charakteristikami jsou: buddhistický politický režim, režim k buddhismu nepřátelský, protirežimní sangha, sangha spolupracující s režimem. Spektrum interakcí mezi politickou elitou a sanghou je tedy různorodé a neodpovídá pouze jednomu vzorci. V jedné z podkapitol jsou také analyzovány výsledky kvalitativního výzkumu. Analýza se zaměřuje na názor politických aktivistů ohledně problematiky vzájemného vztahu náboženství a politiky v Barmě. Tito lidé reflektují především zneužívání buddhismu politickým režimem. Práce vychází ze sekundární literatury, novinových článků a rozhovorů s politickými aktivisty.

Abstract:

The thesis is a case study which is concerned with the relations between religion and politics in Burma mainly in postcolonial period. Burma is country where nondemocratic military regime as well as Theravada Buddhism, the largest religion, influences the functioning of the society. Politics and Buddhism enter the mutual interactions which constitute different forms of relations. The aim of the thesis is to describe which forms gain the mutual relations and how are via them form the main actors. In a theoretical part, the thesis introduces the way how it is worked with the topic of religion and politics in the scientific west literature. Then it is defined in which way it is worked with the relations of religion and politics in the framework of this thesis. The whole thesis is inspired by relational approach of studying social phenomenon. That is why the basic units of the analysis are relations among actors. For the thesis there are two main actors, the Buddhist Sangha and the political elite. Between these actors are, in the framework of the thesis, identified four types of relations which appeared during the modern period of the history. Because of these relations the actors gain different characteristics. These characteristics are: the Buddhist political regime, the regime hostile to the Buddhism, the antiregime Sangha, the Sangha cooperating with the regime. Spectrum of the interaction between the political elite and the Sangha is varied and does not correspond with only one pattern. There are also analyzed results of the field research in one of the chapters. The analysis is concerned with the opinion of political activist about mutual relation of religions and politics in Burma. These people reflect mainly misuse of the religion by the political regime. The thesis draws from secondary literature, newspaper articles and interviews with political activists.
