Possibilities of Renovation Functionalist Coffee Houses in Brno

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá brněnskými kavárnami postavenými v meziválečném období první republiky ve stylu funkcionalismu. Zkoumá podmínky vzniku těchto kaváren a jejich historii od doby první republiky až do současnosti. V posledních několika letech je možné pozorovat zvýšený zájem odborné i laické veřejnosti o stavby moderní architektury z počátku dvacátého století. V souvislosti s tím roste také zájem o funkcionalistické kavárny, z nichž mnohé z nich byly v nedávné době rekonstruovány a znovuotevřeny. Tato práce se věnuje jak motivům, které vedou investory k obnově těchto památek, tak také způsobům jejich obnovy. Vzhledem k okolnostem a současné ekonomické situaci často není ve finančních možnostech nebo v zájmu investorů obnovit kavárny v jejich původní podobě. Přesto je možné, alespoň částečně obnovit genius loci těchto míst. A to především díky osobnímu zájmu majitele a investora. Obnovit někdejší atmosféru kavárny lze pouze v případě, že cílem rekonstrukce není pouze motiv zisku, ale také snaha obnovit zajímavé místo jako takové, jinak se může stát, že místa ztratí svou původní atmosféru a stanou se z nich pouhé gastronomické provozovny v architektonicky cenných stavbách. V souvislosti s opravami a rekonstrukcemi těchto objektů se práce věnuje problematice památkové péče v oblasti architektury z počátku dvacátého století. Ke zpracování práce bude využita dostupná literatura a také osobní rozhovory s vlastníky a provozovateli některých obnovených funkcionalistických kaváren.

Abstract:

This bachelor's theses main focus is on cafes in Brno, which were built during the interwar period of the First Republic in the functionalist style. It examines the present state of these cafes as well as their history from the First Republic to the present. A rise of interest in the buildings of modern architecture from the early twentieth century can be observed in the last few years, both from expert and general public. In connection with this, a rational interest is growing for the functionalist cafes, many of which have been recently renovated and reopened. This work is focused on the motives that lead investors to restore these monuments, as well as ways of their recovery. Given the circumstances and the current economic situation, it is not often in the financial capacity or in the investors will to recover cafes in their original form. However, it is possible, at least partially, to restore the genius loci of these places, mainly thanks to the personal interest of owners and investors. The former atmosphere of the café can only be achieved if the main goal isn't profit alone, but also an effort to restore it as a monument as such, only then it will be more than mere gastronomic establishment in an otherwise architecturally valuable building. In context of repairs and reconstruction of these objects, my work analyzes the issues connected to conservation of architecture from the early twentieth century. I will use available literature and interviews with owners and operators of some renewed functionalist cafes, as a main source of information to write this thesis.
