Matroid Algorithms and Their Applications in Optimization

Abstract:

Matroidy jsou kombinatorické struktury, které zobecňují pojmy teorie grafů a lineární algebry. Teorie matroidů má významné uplatnění v oblasti optimalizace; matroidy úzce souvisí s hladovými algoritmy a ukázaly se i jako silný nástroj při návrhu parametrizovaných algoritmů. V této práci se však zaměřujeme na odlišné využití matroidů -- studujeme hloubkové parametry matroidů z jejich algoritmického a kombinatorického hlediska a zkoumáme, jak lze jejich strukturální vlastnosti aplikovat v kontextu optimalizace, zejména celočíselného programování. Nedávné výsledky ukazují, že hloubkové parametry matroidů lze využít k návrhu algoritmů pro transformaci matice omezení na ekvivalentní instanci s blokovou strukturou. Cílem této práce je dále zkoumat strukturální vlastnosti těchto parametrů a jejich možné aplikace.

Abstract:

Matroids play an important role in the theory of combinatorial optimization; they have a strong connection to greedy algorithms and have shown to be a powerful tool in the design of parameterized algorithms. However, in this thesis proposal, we aim at using matroids differently: rather than viewing them as an optimization object, we study matroid structural parameters from algorithmic and combinatorial perspective, and investigate how their structural properties can be applied in the context of combinatorial optimization, in particular integer programming. Our main focus is on matroid depth parameters, namely contraction*-depth and deletion-depth of matroids representable over finite fields. A recent line of research shows how these parameters can be used to design algorithms that efficiently transform the constraint matrix of an instance of integer programming into its row-equivalent, sparser form. In this work, we further investigate the structural properties of these depth parameters and their possible algorithmic applications.
