Abstract:

Focusing on the unique and extraordinary first presidential term, the thesis illustrates Washington's struggle to establish a nation void of monarchical despotism, yet strong enough to preserve the fragile Union. Being aware that he was the symbolic personification of that government many Americans idolized, Washington succeeded to make himself (and the government) conspicuous to the common man on his two national tours. Washington's indispensability in reconciling inimical sentiments in surfacing partisanship is also documented.
