Gender as a social construct in Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale and in Suzanne Collins's The Hunger Games

Abstract:

This bachelor's thesis provides a critical comparison of two dystopian novels - The Handmaid's Tale, written by Margaret Atwood, and Suzanne Collins's trilogy The Hunger Games. It describes and analyses the female protagonists in terms of gender performativity and sexuality performance and in addition to this, it also focuses on the depiction of gender as a social construct with connection to the plot and romantic relationships of the main characters. It explores the different perceptions of gender and gender roles that society tends to assign to women as they are perceived as ideal and socially acceptable or appropriate and how they are contributing to the overall depiction of the fictional dystopian world and the society's approach to women's rights.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zaměřuje na srovnání dvou dystopických románů - Příběh služebnice od Margaret Atwoodové a Hunger Games od Suzanne Collinsové. Práce se věnuje analýze ženských postav a stereotypickému znázornění tohoto pohlaví. Také se zaměřuje na znázornění genderu jako sociální konstruktu v návaznosti na děj románů a milostných vztahů hlavních hrdinek. Dále se práce věnuje různým stereotypickým rolím, které jsou k ženám přiřazovány a jakou tyto stereotypy hrají roli v celkovém pojetí dystopického světa a v přístupu společnosti k právům žen.
