"The peace that death allows me is not mine": Representing Corpses in Three Early Seventeenth-Century Tragedies

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je analyzovat několik znázornění mrtvol v třech hrách ze sedmnáctého století: The Second Maiden’s Tragedy od Thomase Middletona, The Wonder of Women od Johna Marstona a The Tragedy of Hoffman od Henryho Chettla s ohledem na historické souvislosti, praktiky a názory té doby. Tato práce ukazuje, že mrtvoly v dramatu raného novověku mají různorodé funkce. Tato práce předkládá informace o důležitosti mrtvol v raném novověku Anglie. Analytická část se zabývá znázorněním nekrofilie, vztahem duše s jejím tělem, tehdejší praktiky s mrtvými těly, spojitostí mrtvol s pomstou a smrtí jako vzorem v umění.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to analyze several representations of corpses in three early seventeenth-century tragedies: The Second Maiden’s Tragedy by Thomas Middleton, The Wonder of Women by John Marston and The Tragedy of Hoffman by Henry Chettle with regard to historical context, practices, and beliefs at the time. This thesis demonstrates that corpses in early modern drama have various roles. The thesis provides information about the importance of corpses in early modern England. The analytical part deals with the representation of necrophilia, the connection of a soul with a body, the then common practices with the dead bodies, the relation of the corpse to revenge and death as a motif in art.
