Adalbert Stifter, an accomplished Austrian writer, painter and pedagogue was born in Horní Planá in Šumava. He connected his literary works with Šumava and he describes lives of people living in this region and the history of south Bohemia (“Witiko”). Adalbert Stifter byl uznávaný rakouský spisovatel, malíř a pedagog. Narodil se v Horní Plané na Šumavě. S Šumavou spojil svou literární tvorbu, ve svých dílech líčil životy tamních obyvatel a historii jižních Čech (román „Vítek“), byl autorem mnoha povídek („Hvozd“, „Žula“, „Lesní poutník“, „Horský křišťál“ a dalších).
