Comparison of Self-Service Business Intelligence tools

Abstract:

Cílem diplomové práce je analýza a porovnání komerčních nástrojů z oblasti Self-Service Business Intelligence. V práci budou na lokálním prostředí porovnávány nástroje Power BI od společnosti Microsoft a Tableau od společnosti Tableau Software. Teoretická část se kromě rešerše knih a prací na toto téma zaměřuje na vysvětlení problema-tiky Business Intelligence a její architektury s přihlédnutím k několika aktuálním přístupům: klasický přístup, In-memory přístup a Self-Service přístup. Teoretická část též pojednává o důvodech pro přechod k Self-Service BI přístupu a s tím související proměně role IT oddě-lení. Analytická část práce se věnuje definici vhodných metrik, podle kterých jsou vybrané nástroje porovnávány na základě vícekriteriální analýzy. Tyto metriky jsou seskupeny do několika vrstev, částečně kopírujících logickou strukturu BI architektury. Patří mezi ně datová, transformační, prezentační, publikační a na závěr komunitní vrstva. Ke stanovení vah je využita tzv. Fullerova metoda a výsledné hodnocení bude dosaženo na základě metody váženého součtu nabytých hodnot. Hlavním přínosem diplomové práce je porovnání výše zmíněných Self-Service BI nástrojů a analýza toho, jak se s jednotlivými metrikami a scénáři dokáží vypořádat. Čtenář by se měl na základě této práce dostatečně zorientovat v oblasti BI a plnohodnotně rozhodnout, který nástroj bude pro jeho využití vhodnější zvolit a jaká úskalí to s sebou přináší.

Abstract:

The objective of my diploma thesis is an analysis and comparison of commercial Self-Service Business Intelligence tools. Publication compares Microsoft Power BI and Tableau software tools. In the first theoretical chapter, which includes overview of publications related to main topic, I explain the Business Intelligence and its architecture in currently used approaches: standard, In-memory and Self-Service. The chapter also explains the pros and cons of changing the current IT environment to Self-Service BI model and the related roles. The analytical chapter covers definition of suitable parameters, which are used for compari-son of chosen tools by multicriterial analysis of different approaches. Parameters and met-rics are grouped by several layers following the BI architecture concept. These layers are data, transformation, presentation, publishing and comunity layer. To set the criteria weig-hts, the Fuller method is used and the results are achieved by weighted sum of acquired values. The main benefit of diploma thesis is a comparison of chosen Self-Service BI tools and their analysis by various criteria. Reader should get the complex picture of Business Intelli-gence topic and will be able to choose the right tool for his needs and be familiar with its pros and cons.
