Security of the European Union: Current Threats in the Modern Era

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se věnuje problematice bezpečnosti Evropské unie v souvislosti s aktuálními hrozbami, které narušují její stabilitu a schopnost efektivního fungování. Zaměřuje se na tři klíčové oblasti – terorismus, migraci a kybernetické hrozby – přičemž zdůrazňuje jejich vzájemnou provázanost a dopad na vývoj bezpečnostní politiky EU. V teoretické části je rozebrána základní terminologie, vývoj kolektivní bezpečnostní spolupráce EU a institucionální rámec. Praktická část se opírá o analýzu konkrétních událostí, které stály za důležitým vývojem bezpečnostní politiky EU: Teroristické útoky v Paříži a Bruselu, migrační krize v roce 2015 a pandemie COVID-19 a její dopady na kybernetickou bezpečnost EU. Hlavním cílem práce je nejprve pomocí odborné rešerše literárních zdrojů základně vymezit a obecně popsat zmíněné bezpečnostní hrozby, ovlivňující Evropskou unii a následně prakticky a podrobně tyto hrozby na skutečných případech a skutečnostech analyzovat. Dalším cílem je získat relevantní informace a data, které umožní podrobnější porozumění zkoumanému tématu a formulaci odpovídajících závěrů a doporučení. Formulace dílčích výzkumných otázek v praktické části práce má za cíl napomoci hlubšímu porozumění zvolenému tématu a následně přispět k nalezení odpovědi na hlavní výzkumnou otázku, jakým způsobem tyto hrozby ovlivnily bezpečnostní politiku EU a jak jsou mezi sebou propojené. K dosažení tohoto cíle je využita kvalitativní metoda rešerše odborné a šedé literatury.

Abstract:

This bachelor’s thesis focuses on the issue of the European Union’s security in connection with current threats that undermine its stability and ability to function effectively. It concentrates on three key areas—terrorism, migration, and cyber threats—while emphasizing their interconnection and their impact on the development of the EU’s security policy. The theoretical part addresses the fundamental terminology, the evolution of collective security cooperation within the EU, and the institutional framework. The practical part is based on the analysis of specific events that significantly contributed to the development of EU security policy: the terrorist attacks in Paris and Brussels, the 2015 migration crisis, and the COVID-19 pandemic with its impact on the EU’s cybersecurity. The main objective of the thesis is first to define and describe the mentioned security threats affecting the European Union through a literature review of academic sources, and then to analyze these threats in detail through real-life cases and facts. Another objective is to gather relevant information and data that enable a deeper understanding of the examined topic and to formulate corresponding conclusions and recommendations. The formulation of sub-research questions in the practical part is intended to support a more thorough examination of the selected issue and contribute to answering the main research question: how have these threats influenced the development of the EU’s security policy and how are they interconnected? To achieve this, the thesis applies a qualitative research method based on a review of academic and grey literature.
