The Aristocratic Academy in the Cistercian Monastery Žďár

Abstract:

Období první poloviny 18. století je ve žďárském cisterciáckém klášteře dobou největšího stavebního a hospodářského rozkvětu. Práce se zabývá šlechtickou akademií, která při klášteře mezi lety 1726–1740 fungovala díky vysokým ambicím opata Václava Vejmluvy, s kterým je toto období spjato a které je zároveň hlavním zkoumaným obdobím. Po úvodním zhodnocení pramenné základny a popsání chápání studované problematiky v literatuře je žďárská šlechtická akademie zasazena do kontextu trendů ve vzdělávání šlechty na území Habsburské monarchie na přelomu 17. a 18. století, kde je ukázána změna v chápání koncepce vzdělávání, která ovlivnila šlechtické akademie. Tato postupná změna trvá do poloviny 18. století a jejím výsledkem je systematický způsob vzdělávání pro účely státu. Samotným jádrem práce je rekonstrukce osudu žďárské akademie, která byla doposud v historické literatuře opomíjena. Fungování akademie je popsáno od svého založení roku 1726 do svého zániku v roce 1740 v důsledku války o rakouské dědictví. Práce pojednává i o jednotlivých součástech fungování žďárské vzdělávací instituce pro šlechtice, jako je denní rozvrh, kantoři a žáci. V závěrečné kapitole je na základě virtuální vizualizace objektu otevřena diskuze nad fungováním jezdecké školy při šlechtické akademii, pro kterou byly podmínky nedostatečné

Abstract:

The first half of the 18th century constituted the peak in the growth of economy and construction of the Cistercian monastery in Žďár nad Sázavou. The thesis focuses on an aristocratic academy that was a part of the monastery in the years 1726–1740. It existed thanks to the ambitions of the abbot Václav Vejmluva, with whom is the researched period connected. After the initial evaluation of the historical resources, the author describes how the studied topic was covered in literature. The aristocratic academy is contextualized within the trends of educating aristocrats in Habsburg monarchy at the turn of the 17th and 18th century. This shows the evolution in understanding of the concept of education, which influenced the aristocratic academies. This gradual change lasts until the half of the 18th century and results in a systematic method of educating for the purposes of the state. The core of the thesis is the reconstruction of the aristocratic academy’s fate, which has been neglected in the historical literature. The functioning of the academy is described since its foundation in 1726 until its demise in 1740 due to the war of Austrian succession. The thesis also deals with the individual aspects of the educational institution for young aristocrats, such as the daily schedule, teachers, and pupils. Based on a virtual visualization of the building, the final chapter discusses the functioning and unsuitable conditions of an equestrian academy neighbouring the scholar institution. It also discusses the poor conditions for pupils resulting from the constant construction work.
