Macondo in Europe: García Márquez's Short Stories in Europe

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor's thesis is primarily a theoretical analysis of Macondo and then an analysis of this American literary phenomenon in four selected short stories from the literary work Strange Pilgrims by Colombian author Gabriel García Márquez. The work therefore consists of theoretical and practical part. In the first theoretical part we deal with the origin of Macondo, his space and related works, as well as the life of Gabriel García Márquez and his journey through Europe, which is very crucial in this regard, because these experiences were the starting point and inspired him to create his short stories. We must not forget other important related topics, such as magical realism and literary space. In the practical part, I analyze the short stories: Sleeping Beauty and the Airplane, I Only Came to Use the Phone, The Ghosts of August, The trail of Your Blood in the Snow. We focus on the main characters who travel in Europe and their journey is full of various obstacles. Among other things, the concept of these short stories can be understood as an imaginary mirror that reflects the relations between Latin America and Europe.

Abstract:

Cílem této bakalářské práce je především teoretický rozbor Maconda a následně analýza tohoto amerického literárního fenoménu, jejíž předmětem jsou čtyři vybrané povídky z literárního díla Dvanáct povídek o poutnících od kolumbijského autora Gabriela Garcíi Márqueze. Práce se tedy skládá z teoretické a praktické části. V první teoretické části se zabýváme vznikem Maconda, jeho prostorem a s ním spojenými díly, také životem Gabriela Garcíi Márqueze a jeho cestou po Evropě, která je v tomto ohledu velmi klíčová, protože právě tyto zkušenosti byly výchozí a inspirovaly jej k tvorbě jeho povídek. Nesmíme opomenout další důležitá související témata, kterými jsou např. magický realismus a literární prostor. V praktické části se věnujeme rozboru povídek: Letadlo se spící krasavicí, Přišla jsem si jen zatelefonovat, Srpnová strašidla a Stopa tvé krve ve sněhu. Soustředíme se na hlavní postavy, které cestují v evropské prostoru a jejich cesta je plná různých překážek. Koncept těchto povídek mimo jiné může být chápáno jako pomyslné zrcadlo, které odráží vztahy Latinské Ameriky a Evropy.
