Téma smrti je vždy aktuálna. Prijatie faktu smrti závisí od doby a od spoločnosti v ktorej človek žije. V zlomových obdobiach, akým bolo aj prelom 19. a 20. storočia, téma smrti bola výraznejšia ako inokedy. Tento fakt reflektuje aj umenie – predovšetkým literatúra.
